Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 3097

Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrated: The first ruling of the Qur'an to be abrogated, according to what has been mentioned to us, and Allah knows best, was the matter of the qiblah. Allah Almighty said, "To Allah belong the East and the West, so wherever you turn, there is the Face of Allah" [Surah al-Baqarah: 115]. So the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) faced Bayt al-Maqdis in prayer and left the Ancient House (the Ka'bah). Then Allah said, "The foolish among the people will say: What has turned them away from their qiblah which they used to face?" [Surah al-Baqarah: 142], meaning Bayt al-Maqdis. So Allah abrogated it and turned him (peace and blessings be upon him) towards the Ancient House, and said, "And from wherever you go out, turn your face towards al-Masjid al-Haram, and wherever you may be, turn your faces towards it" [Surah al-Baqarah: 150].
This hadith is sahih (authentic) on the condition of the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim), but they did not record it with this wording.

Note / Clarification: In the place between the square brackets there is a blank space in the original manuscripts, which we have supplied (istidrak) from al-Bayhaqi's "al-Sunan al-Kubra" 2/ 12 and "Ma'rifat al-Sunan wa al-Athar" (2874), where he narrated it from the author (al-Hakim) with his chain and text.

Grading: This report is sahih, and this chain is 'hasan' because of Muhammad bin al-Faraj al-Azraq, and he has been corroborated.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Ata' refers to 'Ibn Abi Muslim al-Khurasani'.
Reference / Source: Al-Bayhaqi recorded it in "al-Sunan" 2/ 12 and "al-Ma'rifah" (2874), and al-Hazimi in "al-I'tibar fi al-Nasikh wa al-Mansukh min al-Athar" p. 63, from Abu Abd Allah al-Hakim with this same chain.
Reference / Source: Abu Ubayd al-Qasim bin Sallam recorded it in "al-Nasikh wa al-Mansukh" (21), and from him Ibn Abi Khaythamah in the third part (safar) of his "Tarikh" (1421), from Hajjaj bin Muhammad with this same chain.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): He also paired Uthman bin Ata' al-Khurasani with Ibn Jurayj, and he (Uthman) is da'if (weak).
Reference / Source: Ibn Abi Hatim recorded it in his "Tafsir" 1/ 212 from al-Hasan bin Muhammad bin al-Sabbah, and Ibn al-Jawzi in "Nawasikh al-Qur'an" 11/ 202 - 203 via the route of Ahmad bin Hanbal, both from Hajjaj bin Muhammad with this same chain - and al-Hasan bin al-Sabbah also paired Uthman bin Ata' with Ibn Jurayj.
Reference / Source: Al-Tabarani recorded it in "Musnad al-Shamiyyin" (2412), and al-Khatib al-Baghdadi in "al-Faqih wa al-Mutafaqqih" (245), via the route of Yunus bin Rashid, from Ata' al-Khurasani, from Ikrimah, from Ibn Abbas.
Grading: There is no harm in Yunus (la ba'sa bihi),
Technical note / Defect ('illah): so if his narration is preserved (mahfuz), then it is of the category of 'additions within connected chains' (al-mazid fi muttasil al-asanid).
Reference / Source: Al-Diya' al-Maqdisi recorded something similar in "al-Mukhtarah" 12/ (344) via the route of Yazid al-Nahwi, from Ikrimah, from Ibn Abbas.
Reference / Source: Al-Tabari also recorded something similar in his "Tafsir" 1/ 502, Ibn Abi Khaythamah in the third part of his "Tarikh" (1422), and al-Bayhaqi in 2/ 12, via the route of Ali bin Abi Talhah from Ibn Abbas.
