Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 3089

Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrated that al-Zuharah (Venus) was a woman among her people who was called "Baydukht".
Imam al-Hakim says: Both chains are sahih (authentic) on the condition of the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim), and the purpose of recording these hadiths is to mention Harut and Marut, and to state Allah's prior decree concerning them and al-Zuharah.

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Grading: Its narrators are thiqah.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Sulayman al-Taymi is Ibn Tarkhan, and Abu 'Uthman is 'Abd al-Rahman bin Mall al-Nahdi.
Reference / Source: Ibn al-Sunni recorded it in "al-Yawm wa al-Laylah" (655) by way of 'Isa bin Yunus from Sulayman al-Taymi, with this chain.

Note / Clarification: It is said that these reports are among the reports of the Children of Israel (Isra'iliyyat), and they are among their fables which cannot be relied upon, and nothing marfu' from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) is established about it. See the commentary on the hadith of Ibn 'Umar in "Musnad Ahmad" 10/(6178), and on the story of Harut and Marut see also what will come later under no. (3696) and (9011).
