It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ubayy bin Ka'b (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said to him: "I am going to recite a surah to you." Ubayy (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "Were you commanded to do that?" He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Yes." Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) recited: "Those who disbelieved among the People of the Book and the polytheists were not going to desist (from their creed) until there came to them the clear proof: a Messenger from Allah reciting purified scriptures." [Surah al-Bayyinah: 1-2]
This hadith has a sahih (authentic) chain, but the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim) did not record it.

Grading: The hadith is sahih li-ghayrihi (authentic due to supporting reports), and this chain is hasan in corroborating chains and supporting reports.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Muhammad bin Yazid bin Sinan is not that strong, though al-Hakim held a good opinion of him and declared him thiqah without qualification, as in the "Su'alat" of Mas'ud al-Sijzi to him (270); and Ma'qil bin 'Ubaydullah is saduq (truthful), hasan in hadith.
