It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mughaffal (may Allah be pleased with him) that he said: I heard the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) reciting this verse: "Then is it to be expected of you, if you were given power, that you would spread corruption on the earth?" [Surah Muhammad: 22]

Grading: Its chain is very weak (da'if jiddan). Technical note / Defect ('illah): The narrator Nufay' Abu Dawud (who is Ibn al-Harith al-A'ma) is matruk (abandoned), and we have not found a biography of the narrator Sa'id bin al-Hakam. Reference / Source: This hadith is in "Qira'at al-Nabi (peace and blessings be upon him)" by Abu 'Umar Hafs bin 'Umar al-Duri (105), Note / Clarification: but in its printed edition it appears (erroneously in the chain) as: "عن أبي الهيثم عن سعيد بن الحكم". Reference / Source: Al-Tha'labi recorded it in his exegesis "al-Kashf wa al-Bayan" 9/35 by way of al-Qasim bin Yunus al-Hilali from Sa'id bin al-Hakam, with this chain, and at its end he added, as marfu': "They are this tribe of Quraysh; Allah took a covenant from them that if they ruled over people they would not spread corruption in the land nor sever their ties of kinship." With wording similar to this, al-Hafiz Ibn Hajar in "al-Fath" 14/272 attributed it to al-Tabari in his "Tahdhib" from the hadith of 'Abdullah bin Mughaffal, but he did not cite its chain.
