Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Grading: Its narrators are, on the whole, "la ba'sa bihim" (acceptable), except for the author's shaykh "Abu al-Husayn al-Qati'i", whose biography could not be found.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Al-Hafiz Ibn Rajab al-Hanbali, in his book "Ahwal al-Qubur", p. 86, declared this hadith defective due to "idtirab" (inconsistency) because of the variation in its chain.
Reference / Source: Al-Bayhaqi narrated it in "Dala'il al-Nubuwwah" 3/ 284 from Abu Abd Allah al-Hakim, with this same chain.
Reference / Source: Al-Tabarani narrated it in "al-Kabir" 2/ (850) and "al-Awsat" (3700), and from him Abu Nu'aym in "al-Hilyah" 1/ 108, from 'Amr bin Hafs al-Sadusi, from Abu Bilal al-Ash'ari, from Yahya bin al-'Ala' al-Razi, from Abd al-A'la bin Abd Allah bin Abi Farwah, from Qatan bin Wahb; in al-Tabarani's "al-Kabir" it is from Abd Allah bin 'Umayr, and in "al-Awsat" from Abd Allah bin 'Umar, and both are errors.
Important point: The correct version is what is in "al-Hilyah": "from 'Ubayd bin 'Umayr", who said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) passed by Mus'ab… (and he mentioned the hadith as mursal), but he did not mention in it his reciting of the verse.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Abu Bilal al-Ash'ari is "da'if" and Yahya bin al-'Ala' is "matruk".
Reference / Source: Abd Allah bin al-Mubarak narrated it in full in "al-Jihad" (95) from Wahb bin Qatan (his name was inverted thus), from 'Ubayd bin 'Umayr as "mursal"; he did not mention Abu Hurayrah in it.
Reference / Source: It will come with the author under number (4366) by way of al-'Attaf bin Khalid, from Abd al-A'la bin Abd Allah bin Abi Farwah, from his father: that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) visited the graves of the martyrs of Uhud… (without the story of Mus'ab bin 'Umayr).
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Al-'Attaf bin Khalid is "saduq" and Abd al-A'la is "thiqah", but his father's status could not be determined, and his narration from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) is "mursal".
Reference / Source: It will also come with the author under number (4966) by way of Abd Allah bin Abd al-Wahhab al-Hajabi, from Hatim bin Isma'il, from Abd al-A'la bin Abd Allah bin Abi Farwah, from Qatan bin Wahb, from 'Ubayd bin 'Umayr, from Abu Dharr, containing only the story of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) passing by Mus'ab and reciting the verse (without the rest of the details).
Grading: This is the best of them in terms of status.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Abd al-Wahhab al-Hajabi was contradicted by Qutaybah bin Sa'id (as in Abu Nu'aym 1/ 107-108); he narrated it from Hatim bin Isma'il with this same chain from 'Ubayd bin 'Umayr as "mursal", and did not mention Abu Dharr in it.
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: The last part of the hadith (without the story of Mus'ab) is supported by the hadith of Sahl bin Sa'd found in Abu al-Qasim al-Baghawi's "al-Ja'diyyat" (2945), and its chain is "hasan".
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Al-Dhahabi said in "al-Talkhis": "That is what he (al-Hakim) said, but I think it is mawdu' (fabricated); al-Bukhari did not narrate from Qatan, and neither of the two (Shaykhs) recorded from Abd al-A'la." We say: al-Dhahabi's (may Allah have mercy on him) describing it as "mawdu'" cannot be accepted.
