Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 3011

Atiyyah al-Awfi relates: I recited this verse before Sayyiduna Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both): "Allah is the One who created you from weakness, then after weakness made strength, then after strength made weakness and grey hair" [Surah al-Rum: 54] (in which I read the word "da'f" with a fathah on the dad). Sayyiduna Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) read it as "du'f" (with a dammah on the dad) and said: I recited it before the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) just as you recited it before me, and he (peace and blessings be upon him) corrected me just as I have corrected you.
Atiyyah al-Awfi is alone in narrating this hadith, and the two Shaykhs did not use him as evidence, though Imam Muslim used Fudayl bin Marzuq as evidence.

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Grading: Its chain is "da'if".
Technical note / Defect ('illah): This weakness is because of 'Atiyyah bin Sa'd al-'Awfi.
Details of the narration: Abu Hudhayfah here is "Musa bin Mas'ud al-Nahdi", and Sufyan is "al-Thawri".
Reference / Source: Ahmad 9/ (5227), Abu Dawud (3978), and al-Tirmidhi (2936) narrated it by various routes from Fudayl bin Marzuq, with this same chain.
Grading: Al-Tirmidhi graded it "hasan".
General principle: (ضُعْف) with dammah on the dad in all three places is the reading of the Seven other than 'Asim and Hamzah; those two read (ضَعْف) with fathah in all three. See "al-Sab'ah", p. 508.
