Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 2998

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Dharr (may Allah be pleased with him) that he said: I was riding behind the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) on a donkey. He (peace and blessings be upon him) saw the sun as it set and said: "O Abu Dharr, where does this set?" I said: Allah and His Messenger know best. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Indeed, it sets in a hot spring," and here he (peace and blessings be upon him) recited the word "hamiyah" without a hamzah.
This hadith has an authentic (sahih) chain of narration, but the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim) did not record it.

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Grading: This hadith is sahih.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Muhammad bin Maslamah has been criticised somewhat, as explained under hadith (2966), but he is corroborated, and the narrators above him are thiqah. The father of Ibrahim al-Taymi is "Yazid bin Sharik".
Reference / Source: Ahmad 35/ (21459) narrated it from Yazid bin Harun with this same chain, with a longer text than here.
Reference / Source: Abu Dawud (4002) narrated it from 'Uthman bin Abi Shaybah and 'Ubayd Allah bin 'Umar al-Qawariri, from Yazid.
Reference / Source: The basis of this hadith is in al-Bukhari (3199) and Muslim (159) by way of Ibrahim al-Taymi, from his father, from Abu Dharr, but neither of them has the words "أنها تغرب في عين حامية" (that it sets in a hot spring).
General principle: (حامية), with an alif and without hamzah, is the reading of Ibn 'Amir, Hamzah, al-Kisa'i, and 'Asim in the narration of Abu Bakr from him. The rest of the Seven read (حَمِئة) with hamzah and without alif. See "al-Sab'ah" by Ibn Mujahid, p. 398.
