Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 2996

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) used to recite (verse 79 of Surah al-Kahf) in this way: "And ahead of them was a king who seized every (sound) ship by force." [Surah al-Kahf: 79]
This hadith has an authentic (sahih) chain of narration, but the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim) did not record it.

Grading: Its chain is "da'if" (weak) because of Harun bin Hatim; al-Dhahabi declared him weak in "al-Talkhis".
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Attributing this report as marfu' to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) is "munkar". The correct view is that it is "mawquf" on Ibn 'Abbas; it was he who used to read it that way, as 'Amr bin Dinar narrated from Sa'id bin Jubayr, in what al-Bukhari (3401) and (4725), Muslim (2380) (170), al-Tirmidhi (3149) and Ibn Hibban (6220) recorded. It is a "shadh" reading and is to be understood as "tafsir" (explanation).
