Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 2995

Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrates from Sayyiduna Ubayy bin Ka'b (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) recited (the word "la-takhidhta" without a shaddah on the ta) lightly: "If you had wished, you could have taken a wage for it." [Surah al-Kahf: 77]
This hadith is sahih (authentic) on the condition of the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim), but they did not record it. Rather, it is part of the long hadith.

Grading: Its chain is sahih.
Reference / Source: Muslim (2380) (173), Abd Allah bin Ahmad in his additions to "al-Musnad" 35/ (21115), and Ibn Hibban (6325) narrated it by way of 'Amr al-Naqid, with this same chain. Muslim did not explicitly mention the reading in his narration.
General principle: This reading, with the light form and kasrah on the kha', was read among the Seven by Ibn Kathir and Abu 'Amr (Abu 'Amr also assimilated the dhal into the ta'). The rest of the reciters read (لَتَّخَذْتَ) with a doubled ta' and assimilation, except for what Hafs narrated from 'Asim, for he did not assimilate. See "al-Sab'ah", p. 396.

Note / Clarification: This report was mentioned by the two Shaykhs (al-Bukhari and Muslim) in the hadith of 'Amr bin Dinar from Sa'id bin Jubayr, as noted in the words of the author (al-Hakim) on the previous hadith, but it does not mention the "light form".
