Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 2993

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) stayed in Makkah for ten years as a Prophet, then this verse was revealed to him: "(O my Lord!) Cause me to enter with a good entrance and cause me to leave with a good exit" [Surah al-Isra: 80] - in it the letter mim (of madkhal) has a fathah - and then he (peace and blessings be upon him) migrated.
This hadith has an authentic (sahih) chain of narration, but the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim) did not record it.

Hadith Takhrij «
Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Note / Clarification: Manuscripts (Z), (S) and ('A) have "'ashr sinin" (ten years); (B) has "'ishrin sanah" (twenty years); and the printed edition has "thalath 'ashrah sinin" (thirteen years), which is an error. The wording as it is in manuscripts (Z), (S) and ('A) also occurs in al-Tabarani's "al-Kabir" (12618) and al-Bayhaqi's "Dala'il al-Nubuwwah" 2/ 516-517, in the hadith of al-Ashja'i ('Ubayd Allah bin Abd al-Rahman) from Sufyan al-Thawri. In one narration of al-Bayhaqi the wording is "yunabba'" (he was being made a prophet) in place of "nabiyyan", as al-Bayhaqi recorded it.

Grading: Its chain has some "lin" (softness, i.e. weakness).
Technical note / Defect ('illah): This weakness is because of Qabus bin Abi Zabyan.
Reference / Source: This narration will come later under number (4305), in similar wording, by way of Jarir bin Abd al-Hamid from Qabus.
General principle: The reading with fathah on the mim in (مدخل) and (مخرج) is a "shadh" (irregular) reading. The majority of the reciters read both with dammah, as will be pointed out in the narration of Jarir. See "al-Sab'ah" by Ibn Mujahid, p. 232, and "Ithaf Fudala' al-Bashar" by al-Dimyati al-Banna, p. 189.
