Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 2963

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Amr bin al-As (may Allah be pleased with him) that he said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) sent a message to me: "Put on your clothes and your weapons, then come to me." So I put on my clothes and weapons and then came to him (peace and blessings be upon him). I found him (peace and blessings be upon him) performing ablution. He (peace and blessings be upon him) looked me over from top to bottom (carefully), then said: "O Amr, I want to send you at the head of an army so that Allah may grant you spoils and keep you safe, and I want to set aside a good portion of wealth for you." I said: O Messenger of Allah, I did not accept Islam for the sake of wealth; I became a Muslim only out of desire for Islam and so that I could be with you (peace and blessings be upon him). He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "O Amr, how excellent is righteous wealth for a righteous man!" Here he (peace and blessings be upon him) pronounced the word "ni'imma" with a fathah on the nun and a kasrah under the 'ayn.
This hadith is sahih (authentic) on the condition of Imam Muslim because of the narration of Musa bin Ulayy bin Rabah, and on the condition of Imam Bukhari because of Abu Salih.
