Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 2950

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Laqit bin Sabirah (may Allah be pleased with him), who came with the delegation of the tribe of Banu al-Muntafiq. He said: My companion and I came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), but he was not at home, so Sayyidah Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her) fed us dates and porridge. He said: Only a short while had passed when the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) came, walking with dignity, and asked: "Have you eaten something?" We said: Yes. While we were in that state, the shepherd came with a lamb (a young goat) in his hand. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) asked him: "Has one been born?" He said: Yes. He asked: "What kind?" He said: A female. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Slaughter a sheep in its place." Then he turned to me and said: "Do not ever think that we slaughtered it on your account. Rather, we have a hundred sheep and we do not like their number to increase beyond that; so whenever the shepherd brings a newborn, we slaughter a sheep in its place." Ibn Jurayj said that in this sentence the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) used the words "la tahsibanna" (with a kasrah under the sin), and did not say "la tahsabanna" (with a fathah).

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
(1) تحرَّف في النسخ الخطية إلى: أوالدك، والتصويب من مصادر التخريج.
Correction of the text: In the manuscripts this word was miswritten as "أوالدك"; it has been corrected from the sources that record the hadith.

(2) لفظ "مئة" لم يرد في (ز) و (ص) و (ع) وأثبتناه من (ب)، وهو الموافق لسائر المصادر التي خرّجته.
Correction of the text: The word "مئة" (hundred) was not in manuscripts (Z), (S) and ('A); we have established it from manuscript (B), which agrees with the other sources that record it.

(3) حديث صحيح، وهذا إسناد حسن من أجل محمد بن الفرج الأزرق، وابن جريج قد صرَّح بالتحديث فيما سلف عند المصنف برقم (530) لكن دون قصة السخلة.
Grading of the hadith and chain: The hadith is "sahih", and this chain is "hasan" because of Muhammad bin al-Faraj al-Azraq. Ibn Jurayj explicitly stated that he heard it directly (tahdith) in the earlier narration of the author (al-Hakim) at number (530), but that did not contain the story of the lamb.
وسيأتي مطوَّلًا برقم (7271) من طريق يحيى بن سُليم عن إسماعيل بن كثير.
Reference: This hadith will come at length at number (7271) via Yahya bin Sulaym, from Isma'il bin Kathir.
Statement of the narrator and explanation: At its end is Ibn Jurayj's statement that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said "لا تَحسِبَنَّ" (with kasra on the sin) and did not say "لا تَحسَبَنَّ" (with fatha). Al-'Azimabadi says in "'Awn al-Ma'bud": al-Nawawi said in his commentary: The narrator means that he (peace and blessings be upon him) pronounced it here with kasra on the sin and did not pronounce it with fatha, so that no one should think that I narrated it by meaning according to the other dialect, or that I was in doubt about it or made a mistake and the like; rather, I am certain that he (peace and blessings be upon him) pronounced it with kasra and not with fatha. Despite this, it does not follow that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) did not pronounce it with fatha at another time; rather, he did pronounce it so, for it has been read both ways.
