It is narrated from Sayyiduna Zayd bin Thabit (may Allah be pleased with him) that he said: Recitation (reading the Qur'an) is a sunnah that must be followed. Sulayman (the narrator) says: It means that you should not oppose the people with your own opinion in the matter of following.
This hadith has an authentic chain (sahih al-isnad), but the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim) did not record it.

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Correction of the name: In the manuscripts this name was corrupted to "Abdullah"; the correct name is taken from al-Bayhaqi's "Shu'ab al-Iman" (2425), where he recorded it from the author (al-Hakim) with his chain and text. The narration of Sulayman bin Dawud al-Hashimi from Abd al-Rahman bin Abi al-Zinad is well known. Abu al-Zinad's name is "Abdullah bin Dhakwan", and he had no son named "Abdullah".
Grading of the chain: Its chain is "hasan" on account of Abd al-Rahman bin Abi al-Zinad. Reference / Source: It was recorded by al-Bayhaqi in "Shu'ab al-Iman" (2425) from Abu Abdullah al-Hakim, with this same chain. Reference / Source: It was recorded by Sa'id bin Mansur in his "Sunan" (67), and via him by al-Tabarani in "al-Kabir" (4855), al-Bayhaqi in "al-Sunan" (2/ 385) and al-Khatib in "al-Jami'" (1596), from Abd al-Rahman bin Abi al-Zinad. Al-Tabarani also mentioned "Sa'id bin Abi Maryam" and "'Isa bin Mina'" alongside Sa'id bin Mansur. Statement of al-Bayhaqi: Al-Bayhaqi said in "al-Sunan": What he (the narrator) meant, and Allah knows best, is that following those before us in the letters and the readings is a "sunnah to be followed". It is not permissible to go against the Mushaf, which is the standard (imam), nor to go against the well-known readings, even if something else is permissible in the language or more apparent in it. Statement of al-Baghawi: Al-Baghawi said in "Sharh al-Sunnah" (4/ 512): The Companions, the Successors and those after them are in "consensus" on this: that recitation is a "sunnah", so no one may recite a letter except with a sahih report from the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) that agrees with the script of the Mushaf, which he took by word of mouth and direct instruction.
