It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) that the Noble Qur'an was separated from the Dhikr (the Preserved Tablet) and placed in the House of Honour (Bayt al-Izzah) in the lowest heaven. Then Jibril (peace be upon him) kept sending it down upon the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) in stages and in measured order.
This hadith has an authentic chain (sahih al-isnad), but the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim) did not record it.

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Correction of the chain: In manuscript (B) "haddathana" is added after it, which turns it into a narration of Abu Tahir al-Zubayri from Muhammad bin Abdullah al-Asbahani, and this is an "error". For this Abu Tahir al-Zubayri is himself "Muhammad bin Abdullah bin al-Zubayr al-Asbahani", as it also appears correctly in al-Bayhaqi's "al-Asma' wa al-Sifat" (496), where he recorded it from the author (al-Hakim) with his chain and text.
Grading: This is a "mawquf report" and it is "sahih". Examining the narrator: We could not find a biography of Abu Tahir al-Zubayri to make his status clear, but he is not "alone" in this narration. It is narrated from Sufyan (al-Thawri) by other routes as well, among them the narration of Abu Hudhayfah al-Nahdi from him, which will come with the author at number (4262); likewise it is narrated by several routes from al-A'mash. Technical note (error): The name "Hassan bin Hurayth" appears in this chain; that is how it occurs here, but perhaps it is an "error" by one of the narrators below Sufyan. For all the other sources have "Hassan bin Abi al-Ashras", and that is what al-Hafiz al-Mizzi stated definitively in his biography in "al-Tahdhib" and in "Tuhfat al-Ashraf" (5492). Conclusion: Whatever the case, both Hassans (Ibn Hurayth and Ibn Abi al-Ashras) are "thiqah". Reference / Source: It was recorded by al-Nasa'i (7937) and al-Tabarani in "al-Kabir" (12381) via Muhammad bin Yusuf al-Firyabi from Sufyan, with this same chain. With al-Nasa'i the name in this chain is "Hassan" without lineage, while with al-Tabarani it is "Hassan bin Abi al-Ashras". Reference / Source: It was recorded by Ibn Abi Shaybah (10/ 533), al-Tabari (Tafsir 2/ 144), Ibn Abi Hatim (Tafsir 8/ 2690) and al-Tabarani (12382) via various routes from al-A'mash.
