Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 2911

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) that he asked Sayyiduna Uthman bin Affan (may Allah be pleased with him): With what in mind did you people take Surah al-Anfal, which is one of the Mathani (the surahs with fewer than a hundred verses), and Surah Bara'ah, which is one of the Mi'in (the surahs with a hundred or more verses), and join the two together without even writing the line 'Bismillah al-Rahman al-Rahim' between them, and moreover place them among the seven long surahs? Sayyiduna Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him) replied: A period would pass over the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) in which surahs with many verses would be revealed to him. Whenever something was revealed, he would call a scribe of the revelation and say: "Place these verses in the surah in which such-and-such things are mentioned." Likewise, when a verse was revealed, he would say: "Place it in the surah in which such-and-such is mentioned." Now Surah al-Anfal was among the early surahs revealed in Madinah, while Surah Bara'ah (al-Tawbah) was, in terms of revelation, from the last part of the Qur'an, but the subject matter of the two closely resembled each other. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) passed away and had not made clear to us that it was part of it, so we (on account of the similarity of subject matter) presumed that it was part of it. For this reason I placed the two together and did not write the line 'Bismillah al-Rahman al-Rahim' between them.
This hadith is sahih (authentic) on the condition of the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim), but they did not record it.

Hadith Grading
Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Grading of the chain: Its chain is "hasan" on account of Yazid al-Farisi. More than one narrator narrated from him, and he used to write copies of the Qur'an (a scribe of mushafs), as in a report in Ahmad (3410).
Reliability: Abu Hatim al-Razi said (in "al-Jarh wa al-Ta'dil" 9/ 294): "La ba'sa bihi" (there is no harm in him). Al-Tirmidhi graded this hadith of his hasan and Ibn Hibban graded it sahih.
Identifying the narrator (distinction): The preponderant view is that this "Yazid al-Farisi" is a different person from the well-known trustworthy narrator "Yazid bin Hurmuz". Al-Bukhari said in "al-Tarikh al-Kabir" (8/ 367) and "al-Du'afa'" (p. 122): 'Ali (Ibn al-Madini) told me that Abd al-Rahman (Ibn Mahdi) said: "Yazid al-Farisi is Yazid bin Hurmuz." 'Ali said: I mentioned this to Yahya (bin Sa'id al-Qattan) and he did not recognise him, and he said: "He (Ibn Hurmuz) used to be with the governors."
Further examination: Ibn Abi Hatim said ("al-Jarh wa al-Ta'dil" 9/ 293): They differed over whether Yazid bin Hurmuz is Yazid al-Farisi or not. Abd al-Rahman bin Mahdi and Ahmad said that Yazid al-Farisi is Yazid bin Hurmuz, while Yahya bin Sa'id al-Qattan denied that they are one person. I heard my father (Abu Hatim) say: "This Yazid bin Hurmuz is not Yazid al-Farisi; he is someone else. As for Yazid bin Hurmuz, he is the father of Abdullah bin Yazid bin Hurmuz, and Ibn Hurmuz was one of the sons of the Persians who were in Madinah and sat with Abu Hurayrah; he is not Yazid al-Farisi al-Basri who narrates from Ibn 'Abbas."
Decisive statement: Al-Mizzi said in "Tahdhib al-Kamal": The correct view is that Yazid al-Farisi is other than (a different person from) Yazid bin Hurmuz.
Reference / Source: It was recorded by Ahmad (1/ 399, 499), Abu Dawud (786, 787), al-Tirmidhi (3086), al-Nasa'i (7953) and Ibn Hibban (43) via various routes from 'Awf bin Abi Jamilah, with this same chain.
Statement of al-Tirmidhi: Al-Tirmidhi said: This hadith is hasan; we know it only as the narration of 'Awf from Yazid al-Farisi from Ibn 'Abbas. Yazid al-Farisi narrated more than one hadith from Ibn 'Abbas, and it is said that he is Yazid bin Hurmuz.
Reference: This narration will come at number (3311) via Rawh bin 'Ubadah from 'Awf.
