حدثنا علي بن عيسى، حدثنا إبراهيم بن أبي طالب، حدثنا ابن أبي عمر، حدثنا سفيان، عن الزُّهْري، عن عُرْوة، عن عائشة - قال سفيان: حَفِظَه لنا ابنُ إسحاق -: أنَّ أول شيءٍ نَزَلَ من القرآن ﴿اقْرَأْ بِاسْمِ رَبِّكَ الَّذِي خَلَقَ﴾ (2).

It is narrated from the Mother of the Believers, Sayyidah Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her), that the very first thing of the Qur'an that was revealed was "Read in the name of your Lord who created" [Surah al-Alaq: 1].

(2) حديث صحيح، رجاله ثقات إلّا أنَّ سفيان بن عيينة لم يسمعه من الزهري كما قال المصنف فيما سيأتي برقم (3997)، فقد كان سفيان يُدخِل بينهما فيه ابنَ إسحاق.
Grading: The hadith is "sahih"; its narrators are thiqah (trustworthy).
Technical note (intermediary): However, Sufyan bin 'Uyaynah did not hear it (directly) from al-Zuhri, as the author (al-Hakim) will state later at number (3997). Sufyan used to insert "Ibn Ishaq" as an intermediary between himself and al-Zuhri in this narration.
وأخرجه الطبري 30/ 252، والرامهرمزي في "المحدث الفاصل" (614) من طريق إبراهيم بن سعيد الجوهري، عن سفيان بن عيينة، بهذا الإسناد. وانظر ما قبله.
Reference / Source: It was recorded by al-Tabari (30/ 252) and by al-Ramahurmuzi in "al-Muhaddith al-Fasil" (614) via Ibrahim bin Sa'id al-Jawhari from Sufyan bin 'Uyaynah, with this same chain. (See also the previous narration.)
