It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Musa al-Ash'ari (may Allah be pleased with him) that he said: We used to learn the Qur'an in this mosque, that is, the mosque of Basrah, and we used to sit in circles. It is as if I am looking at him (the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him) between two white garments, and it was from him that I took this surah: "Read in the name of your Lord who created." He said: This was the first surah that was revealed to Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him).
This hadith is sahih (authentic) on the condition of the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim), but they did not record it.

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Identifying the narrator: (In the chain) the speaker is "Abu Raja' al-'Utaridi", who narrates from Abu Musa al-Ash'ari.
Grading of the chain: Its chain is "sahih". Abu Amir al-'Aqadi's name is "Abd al-Malik bin Amr", and Abu Raja' al-'Utaridi's name is "Imran bin Milhan". Reference / Source: Ibn Abi Shaybah (10/ 542 and 14/ 88), Ibn al-Durays in "Fada'il al-Qur'an" (24), al-Tabari in his "Tafsir" (30/ 252) and Abu Nu'aym in "al-Hilyah" (1/ 256) narrated it through various routes from Qurrah bin Khalid, with this same chain. 15/ 16. Explanation: "It was the first surah revealed" does not mean that the whole surah was revealed at once; rather, its first five verses were revealed first and the rest came down later. For the verse "Nay! Indeed, man transgresses" was revealed about Abu Jahl when he saw the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) praying, as in the hadith of Abu Hurayrah in Sahih Muslim (2797).
