Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Grading: The chain of this hadith is "hasan".
Technical note / Defect ('illah): (In the chain) is "'Abbas al-Jurayri", who is Ibn Farrukh; he is not "'Abbas al-Jazari", as Imam Ahmad in his "Musnad", on the word of his shaykh Abd al-Samad (Ibn Abd al-Warith), changed "al-Jurayri" to "al-Jazari" (although in the original copy it was al-Jurayri). Yet narrators other than Imam Ahmad who narrated it from Abd al-Samad called him "'Abbas al-Jurayri", and other narrators from Hammam (such as Amr bin 'Asim al-Kilabi and Abd Allah bin Yazid al-Muqri') also called him "al-Jurayri". Abu al-Walid al-Tayalisi also gave the attribution "al-Jurayri", but he was alone in naming him "al-'Ala'" in place of "'Abbas". So the correct view is that he is "'Abbas al-Jurayri", as al-Dhahabi said in "al-Kashif". Sulayman bin Sulaym al-Himsi corroborated him in the meaning of this hadith.
Reference / Source: Al-Nasa'i narrated it in "Kitab al-'Itq" (Tuhfat al-Ashraf: 8725) from Abd al-Quddus bin Muhammad, from Amr bin 'Asim, with this same chain.
Reference / Source: Imam Ahmad (11/ 6726), and Abu Dawud (3927) from Muhammad bin al-Muthanna; both narrated it likewise from Abd al-Samad bin Abd al-Warith, from Hammam.
Note / Clarification: After narrating it from his father, Abd Allah bin Ahmad said that the chain has "'Abbas al-Jazari" because Abd al-Samad said so, although the copy had "al-Jurayri", which my father corrected to "al-Jazari". We say: Ibn al-Muthanna said "'Abbas al-Jurayri" in his narration, and Ahmad bin Sa'id al-Darimi (al-Daraqutni: 4213) supported him, so what was correct is what was in the original copy of Imam Ahmad. In his narration Abd al-Samad said "one hundred uqiyahs" instead of "one thousand uqiyahs".
Reference / Source: Al-Nasa'i (5008) narrated it by way of Abu al-Walid al-Tayalisi, from Hammam, from "al-'Ala' al-Jurayri", from Amr bin Shu'ayb.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): He called him "al-'Ala' al-Jurayri", thus agreeing (with the others) in the attribution but being alone in the name ('Ala'). The reliable view is that of those who called him "'Abbas", as al-Dhahabi declared correct. In his narration Abu al-Walid said "one hundred uqiyahs", like Abd al-Samad.
Reference / Source: Abu Dawud (3926) narrated it likewise by way of Isma'il bin 'Ayyash, from Sulayman bin Sulaym al-Himsi, from Amr bin Shu'ayb. The wording is: "The mukatab (a slave with a contract to buy his freedom) remains a slave as long as a single dirham of his contract remains unpaid". Its chain too is "hasan".
