It is narrated from Sayyiduna Salman al-Farisi (may Allah be pleased with him) that he said: I made a contract of manumission (mukatabah) with my owners on the condition that I would plant five hundred date-palm saplings for them, and when they took root I would be free. I came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and mentioned this to him. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Plant them and make the condition with them (about their success), and when you intend to plant them, inform me." So he (peace and blessings be upon him) came and began planting them. Except for one sapling which I had planted with my own hand, all of them turned green (took root), except that one sapling.
This hadith of Asim bin Sulayman al-Ahwal is sahih (authentic) on the condition of the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim), but they did not record it.

Note / Clarification: In the handwritten manuscripts this word has been distorted into "Yazid".
(469). Grading: The chain of this hadith is "da'if" because of the weakness of "Abd al-Rahman bin al-Hasan al-Qadi". Technical note / Defect ('illah): He is alone in mentioning "'Asim bin Sulayman" (al-Ahwal) in this chain. In reality, this report with this wording is the narration of "Ali bin Zayd" (Ibn Jud'an), which a group of hadith masters narrated from 'Affan bin Muslim, and Ali bin Zayd is weak by agreement. Therefore the authentication of the hadith in "Musnad Ahmad", made on being misled by the mention of 'Asim bin Sulayman, is not correct at all. And Allah is the Granter of success. Reference / Source: Imam Ahmad (39/ 23730) narrated it likewise from 'Affan bin Muslim, from Hammad bin Salamah, from Ali bin Zayd alone. Likewise Abu Bakr bin Abi Shaybah in his "Musnad" (469) and Ibn Sa'd in "al-Tabaqat" (4/ 75) narrated it from 'Affan, and 'Asim bin Sulayman is not mentioned in it. Details of the narration: At number (2213) we have already explained the disagreement of the narrators regarding the Islam of Salman al-Farisi (may Allah be pleased with him) and what he paid in exchange for his mukatabah (contract of freedom).
