Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 2897

It is narrated from Sayyiduna al-Bara' bin Azib (may Allah be pleased with him) that a Bedouin came to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) and said: O Messenger of Allah! Teach me a deed that will admit me into Paradise. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Although you have made your words brief, you have asked about something very great: free a soul and release a neck." He said: Are these two not one and the same thing? He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "No! Freeing a soul means that you alone take on the responsibility of freeing it, while releasing a neck means that you assist in paying its price. Also included in this are lending a milch animal for its benefit, and doing kindness to an oppressive close relative (who does not keep ties of kinship). Then if you are not able to do that, feed the hungry, give water to the thirsty, enjoin good and forbid evil; and if you are not able to do even that, then restrain your tongue from everything except good."
This hadith has an authentic chain (sahih al-isnad), but the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim) did not record it.

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
(1) إسناده صحيح. طلحة الياميّ: هو ابن مُصرِّف.
Grading: The chain of this hadith is "sahih".
Note / Clarification: (In the chain) Talhah al-Yami is "Ibn Musarrif".
وأخرجه أحمد 30/ (18647)، وابن حبان (374) من طرق عن عيسى بن عبد الرحمن البجلي، بهذا الإسناد.
Reference / Source: Imam Ahmad (30/ 18647) and Ibn Hibban (374) recorded it through various routes from Isa bin Abd al-Rahman al-Bajali, with this same chain.
قوله: "أقصرْتَ الخُطبة"، أي: جئت بالخطبة قصيرة.
Note / Clarification: The phrase "aqsarta al-khutbah" means: you made your speech short (you came with a short speech).
وقوله: "أعرضْتَ المسألة"، أي: جئت بالمسألة واسعة كثيرة.
Note / Clarification: The phrase "a'radta al-mas'alah" means: you made your request wide and very great (you came with a big request).
والنَّسَمة: النفس والرُّوح، وكل دابّة فيها روح فهي نَسَمة، وإنما يريد الناس.
Note / Clarification: "Al-nasamah" means soul and spirit. Every living creature that has a soul is a "nasamah", but here what is meant is "a human being" (freeing a slave).
والمِنْحة: الناقة أو الشاة تعطى ليُنتفَعَ بلبنها ثم تعاد إلى مالكها.
Note / Clarification: "Al-minhah": a she-camel or a goat given to someone so that he may benefit from its milk and then return it to its owner.
Note / Clarification: (The word) "al-mawkufah": in our manuscripts it appears in the form of a passive participle, whereas in the other sources of the takhrij it is "al-wakuf" (on the pattern fa'ul), and this is what is well known in the dictionaries. It means: "a she-camel or goat that gives abundant milk." Perhaps the correct word in al-Hakim's narration is "al-wakufah" (without the mim and with the feminine ta'), since "minhah" is feminine. This is permissible, though rare, in similar cases, as "'ajuzah" is said for an old woman. And Allah knows best.
والفَيء على ذلك الرحم الظالم: العَطفُ عليه والرجوع إلى بِرّه.
Note / Clarification: "Al-fay'" towards that wrongdoing relative: that is, showing kindness to him and returning to treating him well.
