Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Grading: The chain of this hadith is "hasan", as al-Hafiz Ibn Hajar said in "Fath al-Bari" (8/ 532).
Technical note / Defect ('illah): This is because of "Abu Habibah al-Ta'i". Although no one other than Abu Ishaq al-Sabi'i narrated from him, he is one of the senior Successors, as is evident from the story of his visiting Abu al-Darda' and narrating from him, and Abu al-Darda' died early. Ibn Hibban mentioned him in "al-Thiqat". Besides the author (al-Hakim), a group (such as al-Tirmidhi and Ibn Hibban) declared this hadith of his sahih.
Note / Clarification: (In the chain) Abu Nu'aym is "al-Fadl bin Dukayn", Abu Hudhayfah is "Musa bin Mas'ud al-Nahdi", and Sufyan is "al-Thawri".
Reference / Source: Ahmad (36/ 21719, 45/ 27533) and al-Tirmidhi (2123) narrated it by way of Abd al-Rahman bin Mahdi; Ahmad (45/ 27533) from Waki'; and Abu Dawud (3968) from Muhammad bin Kathir al-'Abdi; all three from Sufyan al-Thawri, with this same chain.
Reference / Source: Al-Nasa'i (4873) narrated it likewise by way of Abu al-Ahwas Sallam bin Sulaym; and Ibn Hibban (3336) by way of Idris bin Yazid al-Awdi; both from Abu Ishaq. But in his narration Idris said "like one who gives charity" in place of "yu'tiqu" (frees a slave).
Reference / Source: Al-Nasa'i (6408) narrated it from Muhammad bin Bashshar, from Muhammad bin Ja'far, from Shu'bah, who said: I heard Abu Ishaq (likewise).
Technical note / Defect ('illah): However, Ahmad bin Hanbal in his "Musnad" (36/ 21718) differed from Muhammad bin Bashshar: he narrated it from Muhammad bin Ja'far, from Shu'bah, from "'Ata' bin al-Sa'ib", who said that he heard Abu Ishaq. Thus he added 'Ata' bin al-Sa'ib as an intermediary between Shu'bah and Abu Ishaq. Imam Ahmad is alone in this, since a group narrated it from Shu'bah and none of them mentioned 'Ata'. This agrees with the narration of Muhammad bin Bashshar from Muhammad bin Ja'far. And Shu'bah is well known for narrating from Abu Ishaq without an intermediary. If Imam Ahmad's narration is established, then perhaps Shu'bah heard it both ways, and the mention of 'Ata' falls under "al-mazid fi muttasil al-asanid" (an addition within connected chains). And Allah knows best.
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: Its meaning is supported by the hadith of Abu Hurayrah in al-Bukhari (1419), Muslim (1032) and others, that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was asked: Which charity is greatest? He said: "That you give charity while you are healthy and eager for wealth, fearing poverty and hoping for riches, and do not delay until, when the soul reaches the throat, you say: For so-and-so this much and for so-and-so this much, when it already belongs to so-and-so."
