It is narrated from Sayyiduna Wathilah bin al-Asqa' (may Allah be pleased with him) that he said: I was sitting with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) during the expedition of Tabuk when some people of Banu Sulaym came and said: O Messenger of Allah! Our companion has made Hell obligatory upon himself (through sin). The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Free (a slave) on his behalf; Allah will release every limb of his from the Fire in return for every limb of it."
With these narrations, this hadith of Wathilah is sahih on the condition of the two Shaykhs, and Imam Muslim recorded from the hadith of Abu Hurayrah its wording regarding a Muslim freeing a Muslim (being a protection from the Fire).

Explanation & Benefits

Grading: This hadith is "sahih". In this chain is "Bakr bin Sahl"; although he is weak, he has been corroborated. Reference / Source: Al-Nasa'i (4872) narrated it from al-Rabi' bin Sulayman (the companion of al-Shafi'i); and Ibn Hibban (4307) by way of Ibrahim bin Ya'qub al-Juzajani; both from Abd Allah bin Yusuf, with this same chain. (737). Corroborating chains and supporting reports: Abd Allah bin Salim was corroborated by "Malik bin Anas", in al-Tahawi's "Sharh Mushkil al-Athar" (737). Details of the narration: And this narration will come after it by way of Ayyub bin Suwayd, from Ibrahim bin Abi 'Ablah, from Abd al-A'la bin al-Daylami, from Wathilah. Ayyub is weak, and it is most likely that he made a mistake in naming Ibn al-Daylami; he is actually "Abd Allah". Before it has passed the route of Ibrahim bin Abi 'Ablah, from al-Gharif bin 'Ayyash (the nephew of Abd Allah), from Wathilah.
