Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 2879

Gharif bin al-Daylami relates: We came to Sayyiduna Wathilah bin al-Asqa' (may Allah be pleased with him) and said: Narrate to us a hadith that you heard from the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), in which there is neither addition nor omission. He became angry and said: Even the Qur'an hanging in your homes is (in its reading) subject to addition and omission. We said: That is not what we meant; rather, we want you to narrate to us a hadith that you heard directly from the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). He said: We came to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) concerning a companion of ours who had made Hell obligatory upon himself (through a grave sin), and he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Free (a slave) on his behalf; Allah Almighty will free every limb of his (the sinner) from the Fire in return for every limb of it (the slave)."
This Gharif is a nickname of Abdullah bin al-Daylami.

Explanation & Benefits

Grading: This hadith is "sahih". The hadith of Ahmad bin al-Faraj is "hasan" in corroborating chains and supporting reports, and he has been corroborated. There is no problem with the narrators above him except "al-Gharif" (Ibn 'Ayyash bin Fayruz al-Daylami); no one narrated from him except Ibrahim bin Abi 'Ablah, and Ibn Hibban is alone in mentioning him in "al-Thiqat". But in the next route his paternal uncle "Abd Allah bin Fayruz al-Daylami" corroborated him.
Reference / Source: Ahmad (25/ 16012) narrated it from Ibrahim bin Ishaq al-Taliqani; and Abu Dawud (3964) from Isa bin Muhammad al-Ramli; both from Damrah bin Rabi'ah, with this same chain.
Reference / Source: Ahmad (28/ 16985) and al-Nasa'i (4871) narrated it likewise by way of Abd Allah bin al-Mubarak, from Ibrahim bin Abi 'Ablah. And Ahmad (25/ 16010) narrated it by way of Ziyad bin Abd Allah 'Ulathah, from Ibrahim bin Abi 'Ablah, from Wathilah bin al-Asqa'.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): This is "munqati'" (broken), because Ibn Abi 'Ablah stated explicitly, in al-Tahawi's "Sharh Mushkil al-Athar" (734), that he did not hear from Wathilah.

Technical note / Defect ('illah): The author (al-Hakim) stated firmly that "al-Gharif" is a nickname of Abd Allah bin al-Daylami, although no one before him said this. What is well known is that al-Gharif is the nephew of Abd Allah bin al-Daylami. Thus Abd Allah bin al-Mubarak and Yahya bin Hamzah al-Hadrami, in their narrations of this hadith in al-Tahawi, gave his lineage, saying: "al-Gharif bin 'Ayyash bin Fayruz al-Daylami". And it is known that Fayruz had three sons: Abd Allah, 'Ayyash and al-Dahhak. Ibrahim bin Abi 'Ablah narrated this hadith both from al-Gharif bin 'Ayyash bin Fayruz and from his paternal uncle Abd Allah bin Fayruz (as in the next route), and both of them narrate it from Wathilah bin al-Asqa'.
