It is narrated from Abu Salamah bin Abd al-Rahman and Muhammad bin Abd al-Rahman bin Thawban that Sayyiduna Salman bin Sakhr al-Ansari (may Allah be pleased with him) made zihar against his wife (that is, he declared her like his mother's back). Then the narrator mentioned a hadith similar to it (concerning the expiation).
This chain of transmission is sahih (authentic) on the condition of the two Shaykhs, but they did not record it.

Explanation & Benefits

16/ 198. Grading: This hadith is "sahih" by virtue of its routes and its supporting report, but this (particular) chain is "da'if" (weak). Technical note / Defect ('illah): The reason is Muhammad bin Ishaq's "'an'anah" (narrating with "from"). Al-Bukhari stated with certainty (as al-Tirmidhi reported from him) that Sulayman bin Yasar did not meet Salamah bin Sakhr. Nevertheless, al-Tirmidhi declared the hadith "hasan" through this route, Ibn Khuzaymah (2378) declared it "sahih", and al-Hafiz Ibn Hajar declared its chain "hasan" in "al-Fath" (16/ 198). Reference / Source: Ahmad (26/ 16421) and al-Tirmidhi (3299) narrated it via Yazid bin Harun, with this chain. Grading: Al-Tirmidhi said: the hadith is "hasan". Reference / Source: Ahmad (39/ 23700) and Abu Dawud (2213) narrated it via Abd Allah bin Idris; and Ibn Majah (2062) via Abd Allah bin Numayr. Both narrate it from Muhammad bin Ishaq, likewise. Reference / Source: Bukayr bin al-Ashajj narrated it from Sulayman bin Yasar: "A man from Banu Zurayq called Salamah bin Sakhr had been given a strong share of desire for intercourse", and he mentioned it. Al-Qadi Isma'il al-Jahdami narrated it via him in "Ahkam al-Qur'an" (277), and al-Tahawi in "Ahkam al-Qur'an" (1963). This is "mursal", and its chain is stronger than Ibn Ishaq's chain and its narrators more reliable; but it is supported (as a shahid) by the hadith of Ibn 'Abbas that will come after it, and it is strengthened by the other mursal reports of the same story that will be mentioned. And Allah knows best. Corroborating chains and supporting reports: This hadith of Salamah bin Sakhr was also narrated by "Sa'id bin al-Musayyib" as "mursal". Al-Qadi Isma'il al-Jahdami narrated it via him in "Ahkam al-Qur'an" (278), al-Tahawi in "Ahkam al-Qur'an" (1960), and Abd al-Ghani bin Sa'id in "al-Ghawamid wa al-Mubhamat" (38). Its narrators are "thiqat" (trustworthy). Details of the narration: This narration will come after it via Abu Salamah bin Abd al-Rahman and Muhammad bin Abd al-Rahman bin Thawban, also as "mursal". Reference / Source: Ibn Majah (2064) and al-Tirmidhi (1198) narrated via Abd Allah bin Idris, from Muhammad bin Ishaq, with this chain, from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), concerning a man who pronounced zihar and then had intercourse before expiating; he said: "One expiation." Al-Tirmidhi declared it "hasan". Note / Clarification: "Wahshan" means: hungry, having no food.
Grading: This hadith is "sahih" by virtue of its routes and the supporting report that comes after it. Reference / Source: Al-Tirmidhi (1200) narrated it via 'Ali bin al-Mubarak, from Yahya bin Abi Kathir, likewise, and said: the hadith is "hasan".
