It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) that when Hilal bin Umayyah accused his wife (of adultery), it was said to him: By Allah! The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) will give you eighty lashes. He said: Allah is far too just to have me given eighty lashes when He knows that I saw with my own eyes and heard with my own ears. By Allah! He will never have me lashed. Then the verse of li'an (mutual imprecation) was revealed, and the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) summoned them both and said: "Allah knows that one of you is lying; so will either of you repent?" Hilal said: By Allah! I am truthful. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Swear by Allah, besides whom there is no god, that you are truthful; say this four times, and the fifth time say: If I am lying, may the curse of Allah be upon me." The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Stop him at the fifth, for it is binding." Then Hilal swore. Then the woman swore four times: By Allah, besides whom there is no god, he (Hilal) is among the liars; and the fifth time: if he is truthful, may the wrath of Allah be upon her (the woman). The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Stop her at the fifth, for it is binding." The woman hesitated and was about to confess, but then she said: I will not disgrace my people. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "If she gives birth to a child with dark-rimmed eyes, deep black pupils, full buttocks, and fleshy thighs and shins, then he belongs to the man she has been accused with; and if she gives birth to him sallow in complexion, slender in body and with straight hair, then he belongs to Hilal bin Umayyah." Then the child was born with the description of the evil (the accusation). Ayyub said that Muhammad bin Sirin said: The man with whom Hilal bin Umayyah accused her was Sharik bin Sahma'; he was the brother of al-Bara' bin Malik, the brother of Anas bin Malik through his mother. His mother was black, and Sharik used to stay at Hilal's house.
This hadith is sahih (authentic) on the condition of Imam Bukhari, but he did not record it with this wording; rather, he recorded the hadith of Hisham bin Hassan from Ikrimah in abridged form.

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Grading: The chain of this hadith is "sahih". Technical note / Defect ('illah): There was disagreement over Ayyub (al-Sakhtiyani) in it as to whether it is "connected" (mawsul) or "mursal": Details of the narration: Jarir bin Hazim narrated it from Ayyub as "connected" (mentioning Ibn 'Abbas), as here with the author (al-Hakim) (and via him al-Bayhaqi 7/ 395), and with Ahmad (4/ 2468) and al-Tabari in his "Tafsir" (18/ 82-83); and Hammad bin Zayd with al-Nasa'i (8169). The narrations of Ahmad and al-Nasa'i are abridged. 18/ 81. Details of the narration: Ma'mar (Abd al-Razzaq 12444) and Isma'il Ibn 'Ulayyah (al-Tabari 18/ 81) narrated it from Ayyub, from 'Ikrimah, as "mursal". Reference / Source: Ahmad (4/ 2131) and Abu Dawud (2256) narrated something similar via 'Abbad bin Mansur, from 'Ikrimah. At its beginning is the story of Sa'd bin 'Ubadah's intense protective jealousy, and at its end the saying of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) when she gave birth to a child resembling Sharik bin Sahma': "Were it not for the oaths, I would have dealt with her differently." Corroborating chains and supporting reports: Al-Qasim bin Muhammad bin Abi Bakr al-Siddiq narrated from Ibn 'Abbas that the man who performed li'an with his wife was a man from "Banu al-'Ajlan"; Ahmad (5/ 3106, 3360 and 3449), al-Bukhari (5310 and 5316), Muslim (1497), Ibn Majah (2560) and al-Nasa'i (5635, 7295 and 7296) narrated it. Hilal bin Umayyah, however, was from "Banu Waqif", so these are two stories about two different men. Al-Hafiz Ibn Hajar said in "al-Fath" (14/ 12): There is nothing to prevent the stories being multiple while the revelation (of the verse) is one. Details of the narration: This narration will come later in abridged form at no. (8310) via Hisham bin Hassan, from 'Ikrimah, from Ibn 'Abbas: that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said to Hilal when he first accused his wife: "Evidence, or the prescribed punishment on your back." He mentioned it thus in abridged form, but the original is lengthy, like the author's narration here, and in his lengthy narration he stated with certainty that the man with whom the woman was accused was "Sharik bin Sahma'". (1496). Corroborating chains and supporting reports: In this chapter there is also a narration from Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) in Muslim (1496). Note / Clarification: "Al-akhal" is one whose eyelids are (naturally) black. Note / Clarification: "Al-ad'aj" is one the black of whose eye is intensely black. Note / Clarification: "Sabigh al-alyatayn" means: one whose buttocks are large and full; it is from "subugh" (a garment's or a blessing's being ample). Note / Clarification: "Alaff al-fakhidhayn" means: the thighs being close together because of plumpness. This is considered a defect in a man and a merit in a woman. Note / Clarification: "Khadallaj al-saqayn" means: having large, full shanks. Note / Clarification: "Al-qadif": one who is fine-boned and lean. Note / Clarification: "Al-sabit" (with sukun or kasrah on the ba'): one whose limbs are long and whose build is complete.
(8310). Note / Clarification: The documentation of Hisham bin Hassan's route will come at the later narration, no. (8310).
