Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Grading: This hadith is "sahih li-ghayrihi" (sahih due to supporting evidence), and this chain is "hasan", as Ibn 'Abd al-Barr said in "al-Tamhid" (12/ 19).
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Although (the narrator) Simak bin Harb is, broadly speaking, inconsistent (idtirab) in his narration from 'Ikrimah, there was no disagreement over him in this hadith. Al-Tirmidhi, Ibn al-Jarud, Ibn Khuzaymah, Ibn Hibban, the author (al-Hakim) and others treated his narration from 'Ikrimah as sahih so long as he is not contradicted, is not inconsistent, and is not alone in narrating something objectionable (munkar), especially when Shu'bah and al-Thawri narrate from him. This is the truth, in sha' Allah. Moreover, there is also a narration from Ibn 'Abbas that supports this (as a shahid), as will come. Isra'il (in the chain) is "Ibn Yunus bin Abi Ishaq al-Sabi'i".
Reference / Source: Ahmad (3/ 2059 and 5/ 2972), Abu Dawud (2238), al-Tirmidhi (1144) and Ibn Hibban (4159) narrated it via several routes from Isra'il, with this chain. Al-Tirmidhi declared it "sahih".
Reference / Source: Ibn Majah (2008) narrated it via Hafs bin Jumay', from Simak, likewise.
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: It is supported (as a shahid) by the hadith of Ibn 'Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) that comes after it.
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: And there are sahih "mursal" reports (marasil) from 'Amir al-Sha'bi, Qatadah and 'Ikrimah bin Khalid, found with Ibn Sa'd (10/ 33), Abd al-Razzaq (12647) and al-Tahawi in "Sharh Ma'ani al-Athar" (2/ 149).
