Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 2804

Husayn bin Mihsan narrates from his paternal aunt that she came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) for some need, and he (peace and blessings be upon him) asked: "O woman, do you have a husband?" She said: "Yes." He (peace and blessings be upon him) asked: "How are you with him?" She said: "I spare no effort in serving him, except in what I am unable to do." He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Consider how you are towards him, for he is your Paradise and your Hell."
This narration has been transmitted in the same way by Imam Malik bin Anas, Hammad bin Zayd and al-Darawardi from Yahya bin Sa'id, and it is sahih (authentic), but the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim) did not record it.

Hadith Grading
Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Grading: If Allah wills, its chain is "hasan" because of "Husayn bin Mihsan".
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Some counted Husayn among the Companions and some among the Successors (tabi'un), as al-Hafiz (Ibn Hajar) pointed out in "al-Isabah" (2/ 89). His being a "tabi'i" is more apparent, because according to Ibn al-Sakan he has no direct narration from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). In some routes of this hadith, narrated from Yahya bin Sa'id (al-Ansari), from Bushayr, from Husayn bin Mihsan, that: "his paternal aunt came" (to the Prophet), this is "irsal" (i.e. an intermediary has been omitted), as al-Daraqutni pointed out in "al-'Ilal" (4111). The correct position is that he heard this hadith from his paternal aunt, as occurs here (in the text), so he is therefore a "tabi'i". Two thiqah narrators narrated from him, Ibn Hibban mentioned him in "al-Thiqat" and declared one of his hadiths sahih. Al-Hafiz called him "thiqah" in "Lisan al-Mizan", and al-Mundhiri declared his chain "jayyid" (good) in "al-Targhib wa al-Tarhib" (3/ 34). Sufyan (in the chain) refers to "Sufyan bin 'Uyaynah", and al-Humaydi refers to "'Abdullah bin al-Zubayr al-Makki", the author of the Musnad.
Reference / Source: Al-Nasa'i (8915) recorded it from Muhammad bin Mansur al-Makki, from Sufyan bin 'Uyaynah, with this same chain.
Reference / Source: Al-Nasa'i also recorded it at (8913) through the route of al-Awza'i; at (8914) through the route of al-Layth bin Sa'd; and at (8920) through the route of Sa'id bin Abi Hilal. These three narrate it likewise from Yahya bin Sa'id al-Ansari.
Details of the narration: Except that al-Awza'i named Husayn as "'Abdullah" (in his narration), though with al-Tabarani in "al-Awsat" (528) he gave the correct name (Husayn), in agreement with the group.
Reference / Source: Ahmad (31/ 19003) and al-Nasa'i (8918) recorded it through the route of Yazid bin Harun; Ahmad (45/ 27352) and al-Nasa'i (8917) through the route of Yahya bin Sa'id al-Qattan; al-Nasa'i (8916) through the route of Ya'la bin 'Ubayd al-Tanafisi; and al-Nasa'i (8919) through the route of Malik bin Anas. All of them narrate it from Yahya bin Sa'id al-Ansari, from Bushayr, from Husayn bin Mihsan, that: "A paternal aunt of his came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him)", and so they mentioned it as "mursal" (i.e. relating the incident without having heard it from the aunt).
Details of the narration: It is also narrated from some narrators as "muttasil" (with a connected chain), such as the narration of Ya'la bin 'Ubayd with Ibn Sa'd (10/ 425), and the narration of Yahya bin Sa'id al-Qattan with Musaddad in his "Musnad" (as cited in al-Busiri's Ithaf al-Khiyarah: 3199/ 1).
Reference / Source: Likewise Hammad bin Zayd also narrated it as "muttasil", as found in Ibn Abi 'Asim's "al-Ahad wa al-Mathani" (3357) and al-Tabarani's "al-Mu'jam al-Kabir" (25/ 450); Hammad bin Salamah also, with al-Tabarani (25/ 449); and 'Abd al-Rahim bin Sulayman in al-Bayhaqi's "al-Adab" (58) and "Shu'ab al-Iman" (8357), and in Abu al-Qasim al-Asbahani's "al-Targhib wa al-Tarhib" (1519) (all narrating it as muttasil).
