(2). It is narrated from Amir bin Sa'd that he said: I went in to Qarazah bin Ka'b and Abu Mas'ud al-Ansari (may Allah be pleased with them both) at a wedding celebration, and there were girls singing. I said: "You are distinguished Companions of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) and people of Badr; is this being done in front of you?!" They said: "If you wish, sit with us; otherwise, go. We have been given permission for entertainment (expressing joy) at weddings and for weeping at a calamity." The narrator says: I think he said: "without wailing."

Explanation & Benefits

Grading: This hadith is "hasan" on account of the preceding narration (hasan li-ghayrihi). Technical note / Defect ('illah): (In its own chain) Ibn Abi Darim is "mutakallam fihi" (criticized). And 'Umar bin Ja'far al-Muzani (who is 'Umar bin Ibrahim Abu Bakr), although two narrators other than Ibn Abi Darim narrated from him and he was the "owner of a book", no declaration of his trustworthiness is reported from anyone. However, both of these narrators have been corroborated (mutaba'ah). Reference / Source: Thus al-Nasa'i (5539) recorded it from 'Ali bin Hujr, from Sharik al-Nakha'i, with this same chain. Technical note / Defect ('illah): 'Ali bin Hujr was contradicted by Yahya bin 'Abd al-Hamid al-Himmani, who narrated it in the earlier narration number (353) from Sharik al-Nakha'i, from 'Uthman bin Abi Zur'ah, from 'Amir bin Sa'd. So he mentioned 'Uthman bin Abi Zur'ah (in the chain) in place of Abu Ishaq al-Sabi'i. But Yahya al-Himmani has "weakness", whereas 'Ali bin Hujr is "thiqah", so his ('Ali's) narration takes precedence. This is also supported by the fact that Shu'bah too narrated it from Abu Ishaq (as passed in the previous route), and likewise several other narrators narrated it from Abu Ishaq. This indicates decisively the "error" (wahm) of Yahya al-Himmani, even though the said 'Uthman is (in himself) thiqah. Technical note / Defect ('illah): But there remains Sharik's contradiction of Shu'bah in that he mentioned "Abu Mas'ud al-Ansari" in place of Thabit bin Wadi'ah. (The finding is that) it is established that these three were all present at that time, as indicated by the narration of Yunus bin Abi Ishaq al-Sabi'i from his father, which is in Ahmad bin Mani''s "Musnad" (as cited in Ibn Hajar's al-Matalib al-'Aliyah: 1680). Therefore, in that case there is no contradiction or conflict.
