حدثنا أبو بكر بن إسحاق، أخبرنا محمد بن غالب، حدثنا عمرو بن عَوْن، أخبرنا وكيع، عن شعبة، عن أبي بَلْج يحيى بن سُلَيم، قال: قلت لمحمد بن حاطِب: تَزَوّجتُ، امرأتين ما كان في واحدةٍ منهما صوتٌ - يعني دُفًّا - فقال محمد: قال رسول الله ﷺ: "فَصْلُ ما بين الحَلالِ والحرامِ الصوتُ بالدُّفِّ" (2).
هذا حديث صحيح الإسناد، ولم يُخرجاه.

It is narrated from Abu Balj Yahya bin Sulaym that he said: I said to Muhammad bin Hatib: "I have (on one occasion) held two weddings, and at neither of them was there any sound (that is, the sound of the daff being played)." Muhammad bin Hatib said that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "The distinction between the lawful (marriage) and the unlawful (fornication) is the sound of the daff."
This hadith has a sahih (authentic) chain, but the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim) did not record it.

(2) إسناده حسن من أجل أبي بَلْج يحيى بن سليم، ويقال في اسم أبيه غير ذلك.
Grading: The chain of this hadith is "hasan".
Technical note / Defect ('illah): The reason the chain is hasan is "Abu Balj Yahya bin Sulaym", and there are other views regarding his father's name.
وأخرجه أحمد 30/ (18280) عن محمد بن جعفر، والنسائي في "المجتبى" (3370) من طريق خالد بن الحارث، كلاهما عن شعبة، بهذا الإسناد.
Reference / Source: Ahmad (30/ 18280) recorded it from Muhammad bin Ja'far, and al-Nasa'i in "al-Mujtaba" (3370) through the route of Khalid bin al-Harith; both of them narrate it from Shu'bah with this same chain.
وأخرجه أحمد 24/ (15451)، وابن ماجه (1896)، والترمذي (1088)، والنسائي في "الكبرى" (5537)، وفي "المجتبى" (3369) من طريق هُشَيم بن قشير، وأحمد 30/ (18279) من طريق أبي عوانة، كلاهما عن أبي بَلْج، به. وقال الترمذي: حديث حسن. وقال عبد الحق الإشبيلي في "أحكامه الوسطى" 3/ 160: وغير الترمذي يقول: صحيح.

Grading: Al-Tirmidhi said: This hadith is "hasan". And 'Abd al-Haqq al-Ishbili said in "al-Ahkam al-Wusta" (3/ 160) that (hadith scholars) other than al-Tirmidhi declared it "sahih".
قال ابن الأثير: المراد به إعلان النكاح.
