Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 2779

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) taught us the Sermon of Need (khutbat al-hajah, the sermon recited when there is a need): "All praise is for Allah; we praise Him, we seek His help and we ask His forgiveness, and we seek refuge in Allah from the evils of our own selves. Whomever Allah guides, none can lead astray, and whomever He leads astray, none can guide. And I bear witness that there is no god but Allah, and I bear witness that Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) is His servant and His Messenger." Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) would recite these three verses: "O you who believe, fear Allah as He deserves to be feared, and do not die except as Muslims" [Surah Al Imran: 102]; "O people, fear your Lord who created you from a single soul, and created from it its mate, and spread from the two of them many men and women; and fear Allah, by whom you ask one another (for your rights), and (beware of severing) the ties of kinship. Indeed, Allah is ever watchful over you" [Surah al-Nisa': 1]; "O you who believe, fear Allah and speak words that are straight and right. He will set right your deeds for you and forgive you your sins. And whoever obeys Allah and His Messenger has certainly attained a great success" [Surah al-Ahzab: 70, 71]. After that he (peace and blessings be upon him) would mention (the matter of) his need.

Technical note / Defect ('illah): All the men (narrators) of this chain are thiqah, except that "'Ubaydah" (who is the son of 'Abdullah bin Mas'ud) is not established to have heard from his father (i.e. the chain is munqati'), but there is "mutaba'ah" (corroboration) for him.
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: Also, 'Abd al-Rahman bin al-Hasan al-Qadi is likewise corroborated (mutaba') in this narration.

Important point: This (being mawquf) does not harm the authenticity of the hadith, because its being "marfu'" is established through other routes.
Reference / Source: Abu Dawud (2119) narrated it through the route of Abu 'Iyad from Ibn Mas'ud.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): This narrator "Abu 'Iyad" is majhul (of unknown status).

Note / Clarification: Caution: some narrators added in their narration, after "شرور أنفسنا" (the evils of our souls), the words "ومن سيئات أعمالنا" (and from the evils of our deeds).
