Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 2777

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Uqbah bin Amir (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said to a man: "Are you pleased for me to marry you to so-and-so (a woman)?" He said: "Yes." And he (peace and blessings be upon him) asked the woman: "Are you pleased for me to marry you to so-and-so (a man)?" She said: "Yes." So he (peace and blessings be upon him) married them to each other, but he did not fix a dowry for her, nor did he give her anything (in cash). That man was one of those who had been present at (the treaty of) al-Hudaybiyah, and those of al-Hudaybiyah had a share allotted in Khaybar. When his death drew near, he said: "The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) married me to so-and-so, and I did not fix a dowry for her nor give her anything. I make you witnesses that I have given her my share in Khaybar as her dowry." So the woman took that share and sold it for one hundred thousand (dirhams). The narrator says that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "The best dowry is the one that is easiest."
This hadith is sahih (authentic) on the condition of the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim), but they did not record it.

Grading: This hadith is "sahih".
Reference / Source: Abu Dawud (2117) narrated it from Muhammad bin Yahya al-Dhuhli, Muhammad bin al-Muthanna and 'Umar bin al-Khattab al-Sijistani, and these three narrators narrate it from Abu al-Asbagh al-Harrani with this same chain.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): The "marfu'" portion here at the end of the hadith concerning making the dowry easy (taysir al-sadaq) was mentioned by no one except 'Umar bin al-Khattab al-Sijistani, but he reported it with these words: "خير النكاح أيسره" (The best marriage is the easiest one).
Note / Clarification: Abu Dawud mentioned that the narrator stated this addition at the beginning of the hadith.
Reference / Source: Ibn Hibban (4072) recorded it through the route of Hashim bin al-Qasim al-Harrani, who narrates it from Muhammad bin Salamah, with this same chain.
Details of the narration: In this narration too, the "marfu'" portion that was at the end of the hadith is mentioned at its beginning.
