Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Note / Clarification: The manuscripts have the words "فجاء بها", whereas the adopted text follows the Mahmudiyyah manuscript, as in the al-Mayman edition.
Grading: This hadith is "sahih", and its narrators are thiqah.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): In the narration of Yazid bin Harun from Hammad bin Salamah, the correct version is that there is the intermediary "Ibn 'Umar bin Abi Salamah" between Thabit al-Bunani and 'Umar bin Abi Salamah, as is established from the narrations of Musnad Ahmad and al-Nasa'i.
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: Yazid bin Harun was corroborated by Rawh bin 'Ubadah, 'Affan bin Muslim and Muhammad bin Kathir. All of them made this story of the supplication a narration of Umm Salamah (may Allah be pleased with her) from Abu Salamah (may Allah be pleased with him).
Reference / Source: It was also narrated by 'Amr bin 'Asim, Adam bin Abi Iyas and Abu Dawud al-Tayalisi, but in their chain there is no intermediary between Thabit and 'Umar bin Abi Salamah, and in Adam's narration Thabit explicitly states that he heard it.
Grading: Al-Tirmidhi called it "hasan gharib".
Reference / Source: Musa bin Isma'il al-Tabudhaki narrated it with mention of the intermediary, in Abu Dawud (3119), but Abu Salamah is not mentioned in it.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Al-Hakim narrated it at number (6787) through the same route of al-Tabudhaki without the intermediary, but he mentioned Abu Salamah in it (which is a form of inconsistency).
General principle: Al-Hafiz Ibn Hajar reconciled these differences in "Nata'ij al-Afkar" (4/ 316): it is possible that Thabit al-Bunani first heard it through the intermediary and then met 'Umar bin Abi Salamah himself and heard it from him directly. Likewise, Umm Salamah (may Allah be pleased with her) first heard it from her husband (from the Prophet), and later, when the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) instructed her to say it, she recalled it, which is why she used to narrate it in both ways.
Reference / Source: A group other than Hammad bin Salamah narrated it from Thabit without the intermediary, among them Ja'far bin Sulayman al-Duba'i ('Abd al-Razzaq, Ahmad, al-Tahawi, al-Tabarani).
Reference / Source: Ishaq bin Rahawayh, 'Affan bin Muslim, Abu al-Nadr Hashim bin al-Qasim, Hudbah bin Khalid and Abu Dawud al-Tayalisi; these five narrated it from Thabit al-Bunani via Sulayman bin al-Mughirah.
Reference / Source: Al-Tahawi (5755) narrated it through the route of Zuhayr bin al-'Ala'.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): These three narrators narrated it from Thabit al-Bunani; although there is a slight difference in wording, they all agree on 'Umar bin Abi Salamah.
Grading: Sulayman bin al-Mughirah's narrating it as "mursal" does no harm, because 'Umar bin Abi Salamah is a Companion, and the mursal narration of a Companion is "hujjah" (proof).
Reference / Source: Ibn Majah (1598) narrated it through the route of 'Abd al-Malik bin Qudamah.
Grading: Although 'Abd al-Malik is weak, his hadith is accepted for support.
Reference / Source: Ahmad (26/ 16344) narrated it through the chain of al-Muttalib bin 'Abdullah bin Hantab from Umm Salamah.
Reference / Source: Muslim (918) and Ahmad narrated it through the route of Ibn Safinah (the freed slave of Umm Salamah).
Details of the narration: Most narrators reported it in abridged form, but 'Affan and Yazid bin Harun added the detail that Abu Bakr and 'Umar (may Allah be pleased with them) had also proposed marriage, but she declined; then, upon the proposal of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), she mentioned her jealousy, her children and the absence of a guardian, whereupon he (peace and blessings be upon him) reassured her.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): In Ibn Safinah's narration the one who conveyed the proposal is named as Hatib bin Abi Balta'ah, whereas the others mention 'Umar bin al-Khattab.
Reference / Source: This story will come later at number (6911) through the route of Abu Wa'il Shaqiq bin Salamah from Umm Salamah, in which this beautiful supplication is mentioned: "O Allah, forgive us and him, and grant me a good successor in his place".
Reference / Source: Ahmad, al-Nasa'i and Ibn Hibban narrated it through the route of Abu Bakr bin 'Abd al-Rahman (without the story of the supplication), in which it is mentioned that she had dependants and was advanced in age.
Reference / Source: The last part of this narration (which mentions the choice of staying seven days with a new wife) was narrated through this same route by Ahmad, Muslim, Abu Dawud, Ibn Majah, al-Nasa'i and Ibn Hibban.
Note / Clarification: "الرحاءان" means two millstones (grinding stones). It is the dual of "رحاء", which is also called "رحى". "المرفقة" means a pillow or something to lean on.
