Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Note / Clarification: The printed edition has "'araq" (with ra'), and both readings are narrated. "'Alaq al-qirbah" is the rope by which the waterskin is hung, while "'araq al-qirbah" is its water.
Important point: The meaning here is: "I endured so much hardship and exhaustion to reach you that I was drenched in sweat like (the moisture of) a waterskin."
Note / Clarification: "Daff al-rahilah" is one side of the mount's saddle (sarj).
Grading: Its chain is "sahih".
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Ibn Sirin is Muhammad bin Sirin, and the name of Abu al-Ajfa' al-Sulami is Harim bin Nusayb (there are other views about his father's name). Abd Allah bin Abi Shaybah is the well-known hafiz Abu Bakr bin Abi Shaybah.
Reference / Source: Ibn Majah (1887) recorded it from Abu Bakr bin Abi Shaybah, and Ibn Hibban (4620) via Abu Khaythamah Zuhayr bin Harb, with this same chain.
Details of the narration: Ibn Majah confined himself to the first half of the narration.
Reference / Source: Ahmad (1/287), and al-Nasa'i in "al-Kubra" (5485) and "al-Mujtaba" (3349), recorded it via Isma'il Ibn Ulayyah, and Ibn Majah (1887) via Yazid bin Zuray'. Both of them (Ibn Ulayyah and Yazid) narrate it from Abd Allah bin Awn.
Details of the narration: Ahmad did not quote its wording, while Ibn Majah and al-Nasa'i (in "al-Kubra") confined themselves to the first half.
Reference / Source: Ahmad (287), al-Nasa'i in "al-Kubra" (5485) and "al-Mujtaba" (3349), and Ibn Hibban (4620) recorded it via Hisham bin Hassan, from Muhammad bin Sirin.
Reference / Source: The first half of this narration was recorded on its own by Ahmad (340) and al-Tirmidhi (1114) via Sufyan bin Uyaynah, and by Abu Dawud (2106) via Hammad bin Zayd; both of them narrate it from Ayyub al-Sakhtiyani, from Muhammad bin Sirin.
Reference / Source: Ahmad (285 and 287) and al-Nasa'i (5485) also recorded it via Isma'il Ibn Ulayyah, from Salamah bin Alqamah, from Muhammad bin Sirin, in which Ibn Sirin says: "I was informed from Abu al-Ajfa'" (which indicates that he did not hear it directly).
Technical note / Defect ('illah): However, in Ahmad's narration via Sufyan bin Uyaynah from Ayyub, Ibn Sirin explicitly states that he heard it directly from Abu al-Ajfa'. He likewise states his hearing in the narration of Mansur bin Zadhan (Sa'id bin Mansur 596 and 2547, and others), and on this basis al-Daraqutni in "al-'Ilal" (241) preferred the view that he heard it.
Note / Clarification: The second half of this report has already passed on its own at number (2553) via Isma'il Ibn Ulayyah (from Ayyub, Hisham and Ibn Awn).
Important point: It is narrated that Umar bin al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him) retracted his prohibition of excess in the dowers of women. Abd al-Razzaq (10420) narrated from Qays bin al-Rabi', from Abu Hasin, from Abu Abd al-Rahman al-Sulami, that Umar bin al-Khattab said: "Do not be excessive in the dowers of women." A woman said: "That is not for you, O Umar, for Allah says: 'and you have given one of them a heap (qintar) of gold'" (the narrator said: this is how it is in the reading of Abd Allah, i.e. Ibn Mas'ud) "'then it is not lawful for you to take anything of it back'." Umar said: "A woman argued with Umar and got the better of him."
Grading: Its chain is "hasan" for corroborations and supporting reports because of Qays bin al-Rabi'.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Mujalid bin Sa'id narrated it from al-Sha'bi from Umar as "mursal" (Sa'id bin Mansur 598 and others); some connected it by mentioning Masruq between al-Sha'bi and Umar, which is not sound. Although Mujalid is not strong, his narration is fit for "i'tibar" (consideration as support); and Allah knows best.
Reference / Source: Al-Bayhaqi recorded it via him in "al-Sunan al-Kubra" (7/234).
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Al-Hakim (may Allah have mercy on him) counted Salamah bin Alqamah among those who narrated it from Muhammad bin Sirin as "muttasil" (connected), but this is an error (wahm) on his part, for Salamah bin Alqamah's narration from Ibn Sirin is "not connected", as explained in the takhrij.
Reference / Source: His narration is in Ibn Sa'd's "al-Tabaqat al-Kubra" (10/156).
