Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 2752

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Rabi'ah bin Ka'b al-Aslami (may Allah be pleased with him) that he said: I used to serve the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said to me: "O Rabi'ah, will you not marry?" I said: "By Allah, O Messenger of Allah, I do not intend to marry; I have nothing with which to meet a woman's expenses, and I do not like anything to keep me away from serving you." He (peace and blessings be upon him) turned away from me (and remained silent). Then, some time later, he said again: "O Rabi'ah, will you not marry?" I gave the same answer again: "By Allah, O Messenger of Allah, I do not intend to marry; I have no means for the expenses, nor do I wish to be kept away from you." He (peace and blessings be upon him) turned away again. Rabi'ah says: Then I thought it over and said: "By Allah, O Messenger of Allah, you know better what is good for me in this world and the Hereafter." And I said to myself: "If he (peace and blessings be upon him) asks me a third time, I will say 'Yes.'" So he (peace and blessings be upon him) said the third time: "O Rabi'ah, will you not marry?" I said: "Certainly, O Messenger of Allah! Command me with whatever you wish." He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Go to the family of so-and-so (a clan of the Ansar who kept somewhat distant from the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)) and say to them: 'The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) sends you greetings of peace and orders you to marry Rabi'ah to so-and-so from among your women.'" Rabi'ah says: I went to them and told them this. They said: "Welcome to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) and to the messenger he has sent! By Allah, the messenger of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) will not go back without his need being fulfilled." They honoured me, married me and treated me with kindness, and they did not ask me for any proof. I returned grieved, and the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) asked: "What is the matter with you?" I said: "O Messenger of Allah, I went to a noble people; they married me, honoured me and treated me kindly, and did not ask me for any proof, but I have nothing to give as the dowry (mahr)." The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said to Buraydah al-Aslami: "O Buraydah, collect for him gold equal to the weight of a date stone." So they collected that much gold, and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Take this to them and say: 'This is her dowry.'" I took it to them and they said: "It is plenty and it is good," and they accepted it and were pleased with it. I said: "Where will I get the wedding feast (walimah) from?" He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "O Buraydah, arrange a sheep for him." So they collected a fat ram for me. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Go to Aishah and tell her to look at the basket that has the food in it and send it." I went to Sayyidah Aishah and told her, and she said: "Here is that basket; it has seven sa' of barley in it. By Allah, we have no food other than this." I took it and came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Take it to them and tell them to make bread from it." I went with the grain and the ram; they accepted the grain and said: "You take care of (slaughtering) the ram." Some people from the tribe of Aslam came; they slaughtered it, skinned it and cooked it, so we had bread and meat ready. I held the wedding feast and invited the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) as well. Rabi'ah says: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) granted me a piece of land and also granted Sayyiduna Abu Bakr a piece of land, and we disagreed about a date palm. Abu Bakr said: "This is within my boundary," and I said: "No, rather it is within my boundary." During this, Abu Bakr said something to me that I disliked; then he regretted it and said to me: "O Rabi'ah, say to me the same as I said to you, so that it becomes retribution (qisas)." I said: "By Allah, I will say nothing to you but good." Abu Bakr said: "By Allah, you will certainly say to me what I said to you, so that it becomes retribution; otherwise I will complain about you to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)." I refused again. Abu Bakr left the land and went to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and I set off following him. Some people of the tribe of Aslam said: "May Allah have mercy on Abu Bakr! He is the one who said what he said, and now he is going to complain against you!" I said: "Do you know who this is? This is Abu Bakr; this is 'the second of the two' (his companion in the cave); this is the elder of the Muslims. Beware! Let him not see you supporting me, or he will become angry; then he will go to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), and he (peace and blessings be upon him) will become angry at his anger, and Allah will become angry at the anger of them both, and Rabi'ah will be ruined." So those people turned away from me, and I kept following Abu Bakr until he reached the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and related the whole incident. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "O Rabi'ah, what is the matter between you and al-Siddiq?" I said, as he had said, that such and such had happened: he told me to say the same as he had said, but I refused. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Yes, do not answer him the way he spoke; rather say: 'May Allah forgive you, O Abu Bakr.'" Rabi'ah says: Hearing this, Abu Bakr al-Siddiq turned away, weeping.
This hadith is sahih (authentic) on the condition of Imam Muslim, but the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim) did not record it.

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Grading: Its chain is "hasan".
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Al-Mubarak bin Fadalah explicitly stated his hearing in the route that will come at number (6343), where the author (al-Hakim) will mention the beginning of this story; this removes the suspicion of his "tadlis".
Important point: The weakening of this hadith in "Musnad Ahmad" is "mujazafah" (a rash overstatement), and there is no "nakarah" (objectionable content that would cause the hadith to be rejected) in its text, as was claimed there.
