Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Grading: This hadith is "sahih", and its narrators are trustworthy (thiqah);
Technical note / Defect ('illah): however, "Abu Awanah" (al-Waddah bin Abd Allah) did not hear it directly from Abu Ishaq al-Sabi'i, as he himself acknowledged in the narration of Mu'alla bin Mansur. Yahya bin Hammad al-Basri likewise narrated it from him, as in Ibn Abi Hatim's "al-'Ilal" (1216).
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Abu Awanah in fact heard it from Abu Ishaq through "Isra'il bin Yunus", as he himself stated, and as Muhammad bin al-Fadl al-Sadusi also said (Ibn Adi, "al-Kamil" 1/425).
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: He also heard it from another trustworthy narrator, "Raqabah bin Masqalah", who narrated it from Abu Ishaq.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Therefore, the explicit statement in Sunan Ibn Majah that Abu Awanah heard it directly from Abu Ishaq is an error (wahm) by the student narrating from Abu Awanah.
Reference / Source: Ibn Majah (1881) recorded it from Muhammad bin Abd al-Malik (bin Abi al-Shawarib), and al-Tirmidhi (1101) from Qutaybah bin Sa'id; both of them narrate it from Abu Awanah, from Abu Ishaq.
Important point: It was narrated from Abu Awanah by several leading imams, such as Abu Dawud al-Tayalisi, Sa'id bin Mansur, Abu al-Walid and Ibn Mahdi, but in none of their narrations is there an explicit statement of hearing (sama').
Reference / Source: Abu Bakr bin Ziyad al-Naysaburi in "Ziyadatuhu 'ala Mukhtasar al-Muzani" (414), Ibn al-A'rabi in his "Mu'jam" (296) and al-Bayhaqi (7/107) recorded it via Mu'alla bin Mansur al-Razi, from Abu Awanah, from Abu Ishaq.
Details of the narration: Mu'alla says that some time later Abu Awanah himself told him: "I did not hear it from Abu Ishaq; between me and him is Isra'il bin Yunus."
Reference / Source: Ibn Abi Hatim recorded it in "al-'Ilal" (1216) via Yahya bin Hammad al-Basri, in which something similar to what Mu'alla bin Mansur said is stated, though the wording there has suffered some distortion.
Reference / Source: Ibn Adi recorded it in "al-Kamil" (1/425) via Sulayman bin Ayyub, Abbas bin al-Walid and Yahya bin Durust.
Details of the narration: Abbas says that Muhammad bin al-Fadl (known as Arim) was their neighbour, and he used to relate that this hadith and the narration of Asim bin Damrah from Ali were in fact narrated by Abu Awanah from Isra'il, from Abu Ishaq.
Important point: Since Muhammad bin al-Fadl is one of those who narrate from Abu Awanah in the "Sahihayn" and elsewhere, perhaps he heard this clarification from Abu Awanah himself; and Allah knows best.
Reference / Source: Al-Khatib al-Baghdadi recorded it in "Mudih Awham al-Jam' wa al-Tafriq" (1/389) via Yunus bin Muhammad al-Mu'addib, from Abu Awanah, from "Raqabah bin Masqalah".
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Here Raqabah is mentioned instead of Isra'il, and the chain up to Yunus al-Mu'addib is sound and connected.
Important point: It is not unlikely that Abu Awanah heard it from both Isra'il and Raqabah; in any case, this supports the view that Abu Awanah did not hear it directly from Abu Ishaq.
Note / Clarification: This narration has already passed at number (2745) via Isra'il bin Yunus (without Abu Awanah as intermediary).
