It is narrated from Sayyidah Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "A woman is not to be married without the permission of her guardian. If she marries, her marriage is void" - he (peace and blessings be upon him) repeated this three times - "and if the husband has intercourse with her, then in return for it the woman is entitled to her dowry (mahr). And if they (the guardians) quarrel among themselves, then the ruler (sultan) is the guardian of the one who has no guardian."
