It is narrated from Sayyidah Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her) that she said: When Sayyidah Khadijah (may Allah be pleased with her) passed away, Khawlah bint Hakim (may Allah be pleased with her), the wife of Uthman bin Maz'un, said in Makkah: O Messenger of Allah, will you not marry? He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Whom?" She said: If you wish, a virgin, and if you wish, a previously married woman. He (peace and blessings be upon him) asked: "Who is the virgin?" She said: The daughter of the one most beloved to you of Allah's creation, Aishah bint Abi Bakr. He (peace and blessings be upon him) asked: "And who is the previously married woman?" She said: Sawdah bint Zam'ah bin Qays, who has believed in you and followed the law you brought. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Go and mention me to the two of them." So she came and entered the house of Abu Bakr and said: O Abu Bakr, how much good and blessing Allah has brought to you! The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) has sent me to propose to Aishah on his behalf. He said: Call the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) to me. So she called him, and he (peace and blessings be upon him) came, and he (Abu Bakr) married her to him. At that time Aishah was seven years old.
This hadith is sahih (authentic) on the condition of Imam Muslim, but the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim) did not record it.

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
16/ 254. Technical note / Defect ('illah): In manuscript (Z) this name is distorted into "Muhammad" (the correct is Makhlad). See his biography in "Siyar A'lam al-Nubala'" (16/254).
Technical note / Defect ('illah): In the manuscripts the name "Jarir" is wrongly written as "Harb". The narrator Makhlad is known for narrating from Muhammad bin Jarir al-Tabari (see "Tarikh Baghdad" 15/230). And Sa'id bin Yahya al-Umawi is a teacher from whom Ibn Jarir al-Tabari narrated in dozens of places in his books.
Grading: This chain is "hasan" because of Muhammad bin Amr (Ibn Alqamah). Reference / Source: Ahmad (42/25769) recorded it from Muhammad bin Bishr al-Abdi, from Muhammad bin Amr, from Abu Salamah bin Abd al-Rahman and Yahya bin Abd al-Rahman bin Hatib; the two of them said: "When Khadijah (may Allah be pleased with her) died", and they related it in this way, in the form of a "mursal" report. Technical note / Defect ('illah): Ibn Kathir wrote in "al-Bidayah wa al-Nihayah" (4/331) that this passage appears to be mursal but is in fact "muttasil" (connected), because al-Bayhaqi narrated it via Ahmad bin Abd al-Jabbar, from Abd Allah bin Idris al-Awdi, from Muhammad bin Amr, from Yahya bin Abd al-Rahman bin Hatib, in which it is explicitly stated: "Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her) said" (which proves the connection). 11/ 429. Important point: We say: Ibn Kathir overlooked that it also appears in al-Hakim via this same route at number (4494) below, and he also missed the route of Yahya bin Sa'id al-Umawi, which al-Hakim has here. With these, the connection (wasl) of the hadith is confirmed. Grading: Its chain was graded "hasan" by al-Dhahabi ("Siyar A'lam al-Nubala'", p. 230) and al-Hafiz Ibn Hajar ("Fath al-Bari" 11/429). Technical note / Defect ('illah): In Ahmad's narration Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her) was six years old at that time, whereas al-Hakim's has seven years. Ahmad's narration agrees with the narration of Urwah from Aishah in al-Bukhari (3894) and Muslim (1422), and al-Hakim's agrees with other routes in Muslim (1422) and Ahmad (43/26397). General principle: They can be reconciled by saying that she was at the end of her sixth year and the beginning of her seventh (i.e. around six and a half); and Allah knows best.
