It is narrated from Sayyiduna Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) intended to marry a woman, so he sent a woman to look at her and said: "Smell her breath and look at her lower legs." That woman went to them, and they said: O Umm so-and-so, shall we not give you a morning meal? She said: I will only eat food that so-and-so (the girl) brings. The narrator said: She climbed up onto their ledge and looked at her lower legs, then said: Daughter, pick the lice out of my hair. So she began picking out the lice while that woman kept smelling her breath. Then she came and informed (the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him).
This hadith is sahih (authentic) on the condition of Imam Muslim, but they (the two Shaykhs, Bukhari and Muslim) did not record it.

Grading: Its chain is "sahih". Technical note / Defect ('illah): Hisham bin Ali (Abu Ali al-Sirafi) was declared trustworthy by al-Daraqutni, and Ibn Hibban called him "mustaqim al-hadith". However, Abu Dawud in "al-Marasil" (216) contradicted him, narrating it from Musa bin Isma'il, from Hammad bin Salamah, from Thabit as "mursal", and confined himself to the first part of the hadith (up to "'urqubayha"). Corroborating chains and supporting reports: Hisham al-Sirafi is corroborated by Muhammad bin Kathir al-Missisi, who, in Ibn al-Mundhir's "al-Awsat" (7144), narrated it from Hammad bin Salamah, from Thabit, from Anas as "mawsul" and in full. Grading: Muhammad bin Kathir is "hasan al-hadith" in corroborations and supporting reports. Reference / Source: Likewise Umarah bin Zadhan narrated it as "mawsul" from Thabit from Anas, as found in Ahmad's "Musnad" (21/13424). Technical note / Defect ('illah): Although Umarah's narrations from Thabit from Anas include "manakir" (objectionable reports), this narration is not one of them, because he has been corroborated in it. Important point: On the whole, it appears that the mention of Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) in this chain is the "mahfuz" (preserved) version; and Allah knows best. Note / Clarification: Linguistically, "al-'awarid" are the teeth across the width of the mouth, i.e. the teeth between the front teeth (thanaya) and the molars (adras). Its singular is "'arid". Note / Clarification: "Al-'urquban" is the dual of "'urqub", meaning the tendon behind the ankles, a little above the heel. According to Ibn al-Athir, the instruction to look at them was given because if the 'urqubs are dark, the whole body is dark. Note / Clarification: Ibn al-Mulaqqin said in "al-Badr al-Munir" (7/59) that the purpose of looking at the 'urqubs is to know whether the shins are full. Note / Clarification: The word "iflini" is used for searching through the hair and removing lice from it.
