Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 2728

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "When someone (comes with a marriage proposal) to you whose character and religion you are satisfied with, then marry (your woman) to him. If you do not do so, there will be tribulation on the earth and great corruption."
This hadith has a sahih (authentic) chain of narration, but the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim) did not record it.

Hadith Grading
Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Note / Clarification: "Al-Nasri" (with nun) is an attribution to the tribe of Banu Nasr bin Mu'awiyah bin Hawazin.

Grading: Its chain is "da'if" because of the weakness of Abd al-Hamid bin Sulayman.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Although Ahmad and al-Bukhari held a favourable opinion of Abd al-Hamid, other critics declared him weak, and al-Bukhari said: "He sometimes errs in something." He also erred in narrating this hadith as "mawsul" (connected), for the trustworthy imam al-Layth bin Sa'd, a hafiz and authority, and Abd al-Aziz bin Muhammad al-Darawardi, who is strong in hadith, contradicted him and narrated it from Muhammad bin Ajlan from Abd Allah bin Hurmuz as "mursal". Al-Bukhari, as al-Tirmidhi quotes him in his "Jami'", said that the "mursal" version is more likely correct (ashbah); indeed, Abu Dawud in "al-Marasil" after (225) decisively declared its connected form an error. In al-Tirmidhi's "Jami'", in the narration of al-Layth, "Abu Hurayrah" appears in place of "Abd Allah bin Hurmuz", which is an old distortion that went unnoticed by Abu Ali al-Tusi in his "Mustakhraj 'ala al-Tirmidhi" (986), by Ibn al-Qattan in "Bayan al-Wahm wa al-Iham" (5/206) and by al-Mizzi in "Tuhfat al-Ashraf" (15485); we too missed it in our edition of al-Tirmidhi (1109) published by Dar al-Risalah al-'Alamiyyah. The correction of this distortion is established from "'Ilal al-Tirmidhi al-Kabir" (263) and from the sources of the takhrij, as will come.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Hatim bin Isma'il, in al-Tirmidhi's narration as will come, contradicted Muhammad bin Ajlan and narrated it from Abd Allah bin Hurmuz, from Sa'id and Muhammad (the sons of Ubayd), from Abu Hatim al-Muzani.
Grading: In it Sa'id and Muhammad are both unknown (majhul) narrators. Abd Allah bin Hurmuz is called "al-Fadaki" in one narration and "al-Yamani" in another, and it has been said that he is Abd Allah bin Muslim bin Hurmuz al-Makki; if so, he is weak in hadith, and otherwise he too is unknown.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): The name "Wathimah" in al-Hakim's chain is an error; the correct form is "Ibn Wathimah", namely "Zufar bin Wathimah".
Note / Clarification: We had earlier graded this hadith "hasan" in our work on al-Tirmidhi and Ibn Majah, misled by the route of Abu Hatim al-Muzani, but it has now become clear to us that this route is one of the variant forms of the disagreement over the chain of this very hadith, so that grading is to be corrected here.
Reference / Source: Ibn Majah (1967) recorded it from Muhammad bin Abd Allah bin Sabur al-Raqqi, and al-Tirmidhi (1084) from Qutaybah bin Sa'id; both of them narrate it from Abd al-Hamid bin Sulayman with this same chain.
Reference / Source: Sa'id bin Mansur (590) recorded it from Abd al-Aziz bin Muhammad al-Darawardi, and Abu Dawud in "al-Marasil" (225) from Qutaybah bin Sa'id, from al-Layth bin Sa'd. Both of them (al-Darawardi and al-Layth) narrate it from Muhammad bin Ajlan, from Abd Allah bin Hurmuz al-Yamani, as "mursal".
Reference / Source: Al-Tirmidhi (1085) recorded it via Hatim bin Isma'il, from Abd Allah bin Hurmuz, from Muhammad and Sa'id (the sons of Ubayd), from Abu Hatim al-Muzani.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): In our base manuscripts of al-Tirmidhi's "Jami'" (1110), "Abd Allah bin Muslim bin Hurmuz" appears in place of "Abd Allah bin Hurmuz", and al-Mizzi judged this an error in "al-Tuhfah"; but al-Hafiz Ibn Hajar in "Taqrib al-Tahdhib" treated them as one man, attributed here to his grandfather. Before him Abd al-Haqq al-Ishbili had asserted the same, as Ibn al-Qattan quoted from him in "Bayan al-Wahm wa al-Iham" (5/204-205), and Ibn al-Qattan agreed with him.
