Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 2717

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Sa'd bin Abi Waqqas (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Three things are a source of happiness and three things are a source of misery. The things of happiness are: a woman whom, when you look at her, pleases you, and when you are away from her (away from home) you feel secure with her regarding herself and your wealth; second, a mount that is comfortable and brings you up with your companions; and third, a house that is spacious and has many amenities. The things of misery are: a woman whom, when you look at her, displeases you, who uses her tongue against you, and if you are away from her you cannot feel secure with her regarding herself and your wealth; second, a mount that is slow, which tires you if you beat it, and if you leave it, it does not bring you up with your companions; and third, a house that is cramped and has few amenities."
The chain of this hadith is sahih (authentic) from Khalid bin Abdullah al-Wasiti up to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). Muhammad bin Bukayr is alone in this narration; if he memorized it correctly, then it is sahih on the condition of the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim).

Grading: The chain is "strong" (qawi) because of Muhammad bin Bukayr al-Hadrami, since he is "saduq".
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Khalid bin Abd Allah is "al-Wasiti", and Abu Ishaq al-Shaybani is "Sulayman bin Abi Sulayman Fayruz". The name "Abu Bakr bin Hafs" here is an error (wahm); the correct name is "Abu Bakr bin Abi Musa al-Ash'ari", as given explicitly by Ibn al-Mundhir and al-Bazzar. And Sa'd is "Sa'd bin Abi Waqqas".
Reference / Source: Ibn al-Mundhir recorded it in "al-Awsat" (7123) from Muhammad bin Isma'il al-Sa'igh, from Muhammad bin Bukayr, with this same chain.
Reference / Source: Al-Bazzar (1187) recorded it via Amr bin Awn, from Khalid bin Abd Allah (al-Wasiti), in abridged form with the wording: "Part of happiness is a righteous wife, a spacious home and a comfortable mount."
Note / Clarification: This narration has already passed at number (2672) via Isma'il bin Muhammad bin Sa'd from his father, similarly in abridged form.
Note / Clarification: "Al-qatuf" means slow-moving (an animal or mount).
