Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 2698

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Dharr (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "O Abu Dharr, how will you be when death strikes the people so abundantly that a house (meaning a grave) will be obtained in exchange for a slave?" I said: Whatever Allah and His Messenger choose for me. Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "How will you be when such severe hunger strikes the people that you will come to your mosque but, out of weakness, will not have the strength to return to your bed, and getting up from your bed to come to the mosque will become impossible for you?" I said: Whatever Allah and His Messenger consider best for me. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Hold to chastity and self-restraint." Then he said: "How will you be when there is so much killing among the people that Hijarat al-Zayt (a place in Madinah) will be drowned in blood?" I said: Allah and His Messenger know best. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Stay in your house." I said: O Messenger of Allah, should I not take up my sword and confront the one who does this? He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "In that case you would become a partner of those people in their sin." I said: O Messenger of Allah, what if someone forces his way into my house? He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "If you fear that the glint of the sword will overawe you, then do like this (he indicated): throw an edge of your cloak over your face, so that he bears the burden of his sins and yours and becomes one of the people of Hell."
This hadith is sahih (authentic) on the condition of the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim), but they did not record it, because Hammad bin Zayd narrated it from Abu Imran al-Jawni, from al-Musha'ath bin Tarif, from Abdullah bin al-Samit.

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): In our manuscripts this word came as "al-wakif" (with waw); in the lexicon it means flowing or dripping drop by drop. "Al-Wakuf" is a she-camel that gives abundant milk. Although "al-wakif" is not found stated explicitly in the lexicons in this meaning in place of "al-wakuf", by analogy (on the principle that fa'ul and fa'il are interchangeable as intensive forms) it may be permissible.
Important point: However, in all the other sources of the hadith and in the "Mahmudiyyah manuscript" of the Mustadrak (Mayman edition), the word is "bi-al-wasif" (with sad), which means "a serving boy".

Grading: Its chain is sahih.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Hammad bin Zayd narrated it (as will come) and added a narrator, "al-Musha''ath bin Tarif" (who is also called al-Munba'ith), between Abu 'Imran al-Jawni ('Abd al-Malik bin Habib) and 'Abdullah bin al-Samit. Al-Munba'ith was a well-known man of high standing, as al-Hafiz Salih Jazarah described him, and he was also the judge of Herat. Among Abu 'Imran's students only Hammad bin Zayd mentioned him; perhaps Abu 'Imran heard this hadith sometimes through an intermediary and sometimes directly, since his hearing from 'Abdullah bin al-Samit is established and well known.
Reference / Source: Imam Muslim narrated a portion of this long hadith (the Prophet's (peace and blessings be upon him) urging Abu Dharr to pray on time when some rulers delay the prayer) (Muslim: 648) via Hammad bin Zayd from Abu 'Imran from 'Abdullah bin al-Samit directly, without mentioning al-Musha''ath, while Imam Ahmad (35/21445) mentioned it at length (from one of Abu 'Imran's students). Imam al-Daraqutni indicated in "al-'Ilal" (1140) that the portion about prayer is part of this same long hadith.
Reference / Source: Imam Ahmad (35/21325) and Ibn Hibban (6685) narrated it via Marhum bin 'Abd al-'Aziz al-'Attar, and Imam Ahmad (21445) via 'Abd al-'Aziz bin 'Abd al-Samad al-'Ammi; both of them narrate it from Abu 'Imran al-Jawni. The narration of 'Abd al-'Aziz al-'Ammi also contains the addition about praying on time.
Note / Clarification: This narration will come again later at hadith number (8509) via Hammad bin Salamah from Abu 'Imran al-Jawni.
Note / Clarification: This narration will come immediately after it and at hadith number (8510) via Hammad bin Zayd from Abu 'Imran from al-Musha''ath bin Tarif (from 'Abdullah bin al-Samit).
Technical note / Defect ('illah): In this hadith, the explanation of the word "al-bayt" as "al-qabr" (the grave) was made by the narrator Abu 'Imran al-Jawni himself, as is clear from the narrations of Hammad bin Zayd (2928) and Marhum bin 'Abd al-'Aziz (3959) with Imam al-Bazzar.
Note / Clarification: "Hijarat al-Zayt" is the name of a place in Madinah near "al-Zawra'" (where the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) prayed the prayer for rain). It lies in the "Harrah" (stony ground), and it was given this name because of the blackness of its stones, as though olive oil (zayt) had been rubbed on them.
Note / Clarification: "Shu'a' al-sayf" means the gleam and shine of the sword.
Important point: The meaning of his (peace and blessings be upon him) saying "hatta yakuna al-baytu bi-al-wasif" (until a house/grave is worth a slave) is that people will be so unable, or so preoccupied, to bury their dead that no one will be found to dig a grave unless he is paid a slave or its price, or that burial space will become so scarce that each grave plot will have to be bought for a slave.
