(2). It is narrated from Sayyiduna Arfajah bin Shurayh al-Aslami (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said (raising his hands): "Soon after me there will be many trials and disorders. So whomever you see wanting to divide the affair of the Ummah of Muhammad while they are united, kill him, whoever he may be among the people."
This hadith is sahih (authentic) on the condition of the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim), but they did not record it. I have judged it to be on the condition of the two Shaykhs because Shu'bah bin al-Hajjaj, Sufyan bin Sa'id, Shayban bin Abd al-Rahman and Ma'mar bin Rashid narrated it from Ziyad bin Ilaqah; then I found that Abu Hazim al-Ashja'i, Amir al-Sha'bi, Abu Ya'fur al-Abdi and other narrators corroborated Ziyad bin Ilaqah in narrating it from Arfajah. All the narrations of this chapter are collected with me in a separate volume (juz'), so there is no further need to mention these narrations. Furthermore, Imam Muslim recorded the hadith of Abu Nadrah from Sayyiduna Abu Sa'id al-Khudri (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "When allegiance is given to two caliphs, kill the latter of the two." Its explanation is found in the hadith of Abd al-Rahman bin Abd Rabb al-Ka'bah from Abdullah bin Amr (may Allah be pleased with them both), which Imam Muslim recorded.

Grading: Its chain is sahih. Technical note / Defect ('illah): Sadaqah bin al-Fadl al-Marwazi narrated it from Abu Hamzah Muhammad bin Maymun al-Sukkari (with Abu 'Awanah, 7142) and added "Layth bin Abi Sulaym" between Abu Hamzah and Ziyad. Layth bin Abi Sulaym is hasan in hadith in corroborations and supporting reports. Since Abu Hamzah al-Sukkari is not known for tadlis, it appears that he heard it both ways (with and without the intermediary). In any case, a large group of narrators narrated it from Ziyad bin 'Ilaqah. Reference / Source: Imam al-Nasa'i (3470) narrated it through Abu 'Ali Muhammad bin Yahya from 'Abdullah bin 'Uthman ('Abdan) with this same chain. Reference / Source: Imam Ahmad (30/18295, 18296; 31/19000; 33/20277), Imam Muslim (1852), Abu Dawud (4762), al-Nasa'i (3471) and Ibn Hibban (4406) narrated it via Shu'bah bin al-Hajjaj. It is also narrated from Ziyad bin 'Ilaqah via Shayban bin 'Abd al-Rahman (Ahmad 31/18999, Muslim 1852), via Abu 'Awanah, Isra'il bin Yunus al-Sabi'i and 'Abdullah bin al-Mukhtar (Muslim 1852), via Yazid bin Mardanbah (al-Nasa'i 3469) and via Yahya bin Ayyub al-Bajali (Ibn Hibban 4577). Technical note / Defect ('illah): Imam al-Hakim's "istidrak" of this hadith (i.e. including it in the Mustadrak as if it were not in al-Bukhari and Muslim) is an oversight on his part, since it is in Muslim. Reference / Source: Imam Muslim (1852) also narrated something similar in meaning via Abu Ya'fur from 'Arfajah.
(2137). Reference / Source: 'Abd al-Baqi bin Qani' narrated it in "Mu'jam al-Sahabah" (2/281) and al-Tabarani in "al-Mu'jam al-Awsat" (2137) through his route.
(1853). Reference / Source: Imam Muslim narrated it in his Sahih (hadith number 1853).
