Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 2684

It is narrated from Habbah al-Urani; he said: Sayyiduna Abu Sa'id al-Khudri (may Allah be pleased with him) and I went to Sayyiduna Hudhayfah (may Allah be pleased with him) and said: O Abu Abdullah, tell us what you heard from the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) about the trials. Sayyiduna Hudhayfah (may Allah be pleased with him) said that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Stay with the Book of Allah wherever it turns (that is, follow the Book of Allah)." We said: When the people disagree, with whom should we be? He said: "Look for the group in which Ibn Sumayyah is, and hold fast to it, for he will be with the Book of Allah." The narrator said: I asked: Who is Ibn Sumayyah? He said: Do you not know him? I said: Make it clear to me. He said: He is Ammar bin Yasir. I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) say concerning Ammar: "O Abu al-Yaqzan, you will not die until the rebellious group, deviating from the path of truth, kills you."
This hadith has various routes with sahih (authentic) chains; the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim) recorded some of them, but they did not record it with this wording.

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Technical note: In the manuscripts this name has been corrupted (tahrif) into "Khalid", whereas the correct name is "Khulayd", as correctly recorded in al-Hafiz Ibn Hajar's "Ithaf al-Maharah" (4233).

Grading: Its chain is "da'if jiddan" (very weak) because it contains Muslim al-A'war (Ibn Kaysan al-Mula'i), whom some of the hadith scholars abandoned, as al-Dhahabi pointed out in his "Talkhis".
Inconsistency (idtirab): There is disagreement over him in naming the person who accompanied Habbah al-'Urani when he went in to Hudhayfah: here, in Isra'il's narration from him, it is Abu Sa'id al-Khudri; in the narration of Abu Usamah coming at number (5780), and likewise in the narration of Muhammad bin Fudayl with others besides the author (al-Hakim), it is Abu Mas'ud; and in the narration of 'Ali bin Mushir it is Ibn Mas'ud. Habbah al-'Urani (Ibn Juwayn) is himself a weak narrator.
Reference / Source: It was recorded via Muhammad bin Fudayl by al-Bazzar (2948), al-Tabari in his "Tarikh" (5/38-39), al-Tabarani in "al-Kabir" (14430), Abu al-Hasan 'Ali bin 'Umar al-Sukkari in his "Mashyakhah" (96) and al-Khatib in "Tarikh Baghdad" (9/197); and via 'Ali bin Mushir by Abu Ya'la in his "al-Musnad al-Kabir" (as in al-Hafiz's "al-Matalib al-'Aliyah" 4413) and Ibn 'Asakir in "Tarikh Dimashq" (43/428); both of them from Muslim al-A'war, but without the words "Turn with the Book of Allah wherever it turns".
Supporting reports: The sentence "Turn with the Book of Allah wherever it turns" is found in the narration of Mu'adh bin Jabal with al-Tabarani in "al-Kabir" (20/172), "al-Saghir" (749) and "Musnad al-Shamiyyin" (658), and from him Abu Nu'aym in "al-Hilyah" (5/165); its narrators are acceptable, but its Successor did not meet Mu'adh.
Supporting reports: The saying of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) to 'Ammar (may Allah be pleased with him), "The rebellious group will kill you", is narrated from a number of Companions, such as the hadith of Abu Sa'id al-Khudri that follows, the hadith of 'Amr bin Hazm and 'Amr bin al-'As coming at number (2695), and the hadith of Umm Salamah in Muslim (2916).
