(1). It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Sa'id al-Khudri (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Their example is that of a man who shoots an arrow at game, then searches for the arrow where it has fallen; he picks it up and looks at its fuq (notch) but sees no trace of fat or blood on it; then he looks at its feathers and finds no trace of fat or blood there either; then he looks at its nasl (arrowhead) and sees nothing there either. Just as not the slightest trace of fat or blood clung to that arrow, likewise these people will have no connection with Islam."

Grading: The hadith is "sahih", but the present chain is "da'if". Technical note / Defect ('illah): Sa'id bin Bashir is weak (he can be taken into account in corroborations), but no one corroborated him in mentioning "Abu al-Mutawakkil al-Naji" between Qatadah and Abu Sa'id. Imam al-Awza'i and others narrated it without an intermediary, while Abu 'Awanah (who is a thiqah hafiz) made "Abu Nadrah" the intermediary between Qatadah and Abu Sa'id. Our strongest view is that the intermediary "Abu Nadrah" is the correct one, since Sulayman al-Taymi also supports it. Reference / Source: Al-Tabarani narrated it in "al-Awsat" (4369) and "Musnad al-Shamiyyin" (2711) via Muhammad bin Bakkar from Sa'id bin Bashir with this same chain. Reference / Source: Imam Ahmad (18/11416) and (11611), Muslim (1064; the wording is his) and al-Nasa'i (8502) narrated it via Abu 'Awanah from Qatadah from Abu Nadrah that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "There will be two factions in my Ummah, and from between them a group (mariqah) will break away; the one of them closest to the truth will take charge of killing them". This is a portion of Imam al-Awza'i's previous hadith. Reference / Source: Imam Ahmad (17/11018) and Muslim (1064) narrated it via Sulayman al-Taymi from Abu Nadrah from Abu Sa'id al-Khudri that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) mentioned a people who would be in his Ummah, who would come out at a time of division among the people, and whose sign would be shaving the head. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "They are the worst of creation (or among the worst of creation); the one of the two parties closest to the truth will kill them". Example: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) likened them to a hunter who shoots an arrow at game (or at a target), then looks at the arrowhead (al-nasl), its shaft (al-nadiyy) and its notch (al-fuq), but sees no trace of blood (basirah) on it (i.e. they will pass out of the religion so quickly that no trace will remain). Something similar is also narrated via Abu Salamah bin 'Abd al-Rahman by Ahmad (17/11291) and (18/11537, 11579), al-Bukhari (3610), (6163) and (6933), Muslim (1064), Ibn Majah (169), al-Nasa'i (8507), (8508) and (11156) and Ibn Hibban (6741); some of them paired al-Dahhak al-Mishraqi with Abu Salamah in it. Linguistic explanation: "al-Nadiyy" is the arrow shaft before it is carved, while it is still a rod, and "al-basirah" is the trace of blood from which one can tell whether the arrow has hit the game.
