Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 2682

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Anas bin Malik and Sayyiduna Abu Sa'id al-Khudri (may Allah be pleased with them both) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Soon there will be disagreement and division in my Ummah. A people will appear who will speak very well, but their deeds will be bad; they will recite the Qur'an, but it will not go beyond their throats; they will pass out of the religion as an arrow passes right through the game; they will not return (to the religion) until the arrow returns to its notch. They are the worst of all creation and created beings. Tuba (glad tidings) to the one who kills them and the one whom they kill. They will call to the Book of Allah, though they have no connection with the Book of Allah. Whoever fights them will be closer to Allah than they are." The Companions said: O Messenger of Allah, what is their sign? He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Shaving the head."
Qatadah did not hear this hadith from Sayyiduna Abu Sa'id al-Khudri (may Allah be pleased with him); rather, he heard it from Abu al-Mutawakkil al-Naji, from Sayyiduna Abu Sa'id al-Khudri (may Allah be pleased with him).

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Grading: The chain from Anas is "sahih", but Qatadah did not hear from Abu Sa'id al-Khudri, as al-Mizzi stated decisively.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Imam Ahmad and Abu Hatim denied that Qatadah heard from any Companion other than Anas; Abu Hatim and Abu Zur'ah added 'Abdullah bin Sarjis, and Ibn al-Madini added Abu al-Tufayl 'Amir bin Wathilah. The wording of the author (al-Hakim) after it gives the impression that only this one hadith was not heard, but the correct view is that Qatadah did not hear from Abu Sa'id al-Khudri at all; there is an intermediary between them, which will be clarified in the next chain. This report is also narrated from Abu Sa'id al-Khudri through other sahih routes.
Reference / Source: Imam Ahmad (21/13338) narrated it through Abu al-Mughirah al-Khawlani, and Abu Dawud (4765) via al-Walid bin Muslim and Mubashshir bin Isma'il; all three narrate it from Abu 'Amr al-Awza'i with this same chain.
Reference / Source: Something similar is narrated from Abu Sa'id al-Khudri (may Allah be pleased with him) via Abu Salamah bin 'Abd al-Rahman by Ahmad (17/11291), al-Bukhari (5058) and (6931), Muslim (1064), Ibn Majah (169), al-Nasa'i (8035) and Ibn Hibban (6737); via Ma'bad bin Sirin by Ahmad (18/11614) and al-Bukhari (7562); via Abu Nadrah al-Mundhir bin Malik bin Qit'ah by Ahmad (17/11196, 11275) and (18/11448, 11750) and Muslim (1064); via Yazid bin Suhayb al-Faqir by Ahmad (18/11488); and via 'Ata' bin Yasar by al-Bukhari (6931) and Muslim (1064).
Details of the narration: Ma'bad's narration has: "People will come out from the direction of the east", while Abu Nadrah's narration is abridged: "A group will break away at a time of division among the Muslims, and the one of the two parties closer to the truth will kill them". He also has another wording similar to the narration of the author (al-Hakim) that follows.
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: It will come next via Qatadah from al-Mutawakkil al-Naji from Abu Sa'id (which clarifies the intermediary between Qatadah and Abu Sa'id).
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: It will also come at number (2691) via 'Abd al-Malik bin Abi Nadrah from his father from Abu Sa'id al-Khudri, within the story of Dhu al-Khuwaysirah al-Tamimi, where its full takhrij will be given.
