Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Technical note / Manuscript variation: In the manuscripts this word came thus: "hatta 'ala dhikruhu fi al-masjid" (until its mention rose in the mosque), whereas all the other hadith scholars besides the author (al-Hakim) who recorded this hadith have the words: "hatta ata 'ala dhikr bina' al-masjid" (until he came to the mention of building the mosque). It is likewise in Imam al-Bayhaqi's "Dala'il al-Nubuwwah" (2/546), which he narrated from Abu 'Abdullah al-Hakim, from Abu 'Amr bin Abi Ja'far, from Abu al-Qasim al-Baghawi. This is another narration from Imam al-Hakim in which only his teacher differs, and it is not in his "Mustadrak". It is also possible that its meaning here is: Abu Sa'id (may Allah be pleased with him) went back in the historical sequence of his account as he related the Prophet's (peace and blessings be upon him) statements about the Khawarij, from the day of Hunayn and the incident of Dhu al-Khuwaysirah, until he went back in history to the mention of the building of the (Prophet's) mosque. It is also possible that a word has dropped out of the phrase (saqt) or that it has been corrupted (tahrif).
Grading: Its chain is "sahih".
Identification of narrators: Abu Kamil al-Jahdari is Fudayl bin Husayn, Khalid al-Hadhdha' is Ibn Mihran, and 'Ikrimah is Abu 'Abdullah al-Barbari (the freed slave of Ibn 'Abbas).
Scholarly point: The sentence in the hadith, "The rebellious group will kill you", was not heard by Abu Sa'id directly from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), as will be explained later; but this does not harm the authenticity of the hadith, because in that case it is a "mursal of a Companion" (which is accepted).
Reference / Source: Imam al-Bukhari narrated it (447) through Musaddad from 'Abd al-'Aziz bin al-Mukhtar with this same chain.
Difference in wording: In al-Bukhari's version the marfu' words at its end are: "Woe to 'Ammar! He calls them to Paradise and they call him to the Fire". The phrase "The rebellious group will kill you" is absent for most of the transmitters of al-Bukhari, but it is established for some of them, as al-Hafiz Ibn Hajar made clear in "Fath al-Bari" (2/367-368).
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Al-Hafiz Ibn Hajar also explained that Imam al-Bukhari omitted it deliberately (as if he did so after first including it) for a subtle point, namely that Abu Sa'id did not hear this sentence from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), as he himself stated explicitly in some of Abu Nadrah's narrations from him in Musnad Ahmad, and that he heard it from Abu Qatadah al-Ansari (may Allah be pleased with him), as is stated explicitly in some routes of Ahmad and Muslim, as will come. Al-Bukhari confined himself to the part Abu Sa'id heard from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) himself and omitted the "mudraj" (words a Companion inserted after hearing them from someone else). We say: but the inclusion of this sentence in Abu Sa'id's hadith does not harm its authenticity, because at most it would be considered a "mursal of a Companion", which is "hujjah" (proof). How much more so when we know that Imam Shu'bah, in his narration from Khalid al-Hadhdha', confined himself to this sentence alone and mentioned no intermediary between Abu Sa'id al-Khudri and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him)!
Reference / Source: Imam Ahmad (17/11166) and al-Nasa'i (8494) narrated it via Shu'bah bin al-Hajjaj; Ahmad (18/11861) from Mahbub bin al-Hasan; al-Bukhari (2812) via 'Abd al-Wahhab bin 'Abd al-Majid al-Thaqafi; and Ibn Hibban (7078) via Yazid bin Zuray' and (7079) via Khalid bin 'Abdullah al-Wasiti; all of them narrate it from Khalid al-Hadhdha' (with this same chain).
Note / Clarification: Neither Shu'bah nor Yazid bin Zuray' mentioned in their narrations the story of Ibn 'Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) sending 'Ikrimah and his son 'Ali bin 'Abdullah. Mahbub bin al-Hasan, as well as Yazid bin Zuray' and Khalid al-Wasiti, added in their narrations: "He ('Ammar) calls them to Paradise and they (the rebellious group) call him to the Fire".
Technical note / Defect ('illah): The phrase "taqtuluka al-fi'ah al-baghiyah" (The rebellious group will kill you) has been omitted from the transmission of Sahih al-Bukhari by Abu Dharr al-Harawi, so al-Bukhari's practice in the narration of 'Abd al-Wahhab matches his practice in the narration of 'Abd al-'Aziz bin al-Mukhtar (where he also did not include this sentence), while the phrase is established in transmissions other than Abu Dharr's, and Imam Shu'bah confined his narration to this sentence alone.
Grading: Imam Ahmad (17/11221) narrated it via Abu Hisham from Abu Sa'id al-Khudri from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him); this chain is weak because the narrator "Abu Hisham" is "majhul" (unknown).
Reference / Source: Imam Ahmad (11011) narrated it via Dawud bin Abi Hind from Abu Nadrah from Abu Sa'id al-Khudri (may Allah be pleased with him), who said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) commanded us to build the mosque, so we began carrying one brick at a time, while 'Ammar (may Allah be pleased with him) was carrying two bricks at a time, until his head became covered with dust. Abu Sa'id said: "Then my companions told me (and I did not hear it myself from the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)) that he began shaking the dust off his head and saying: 'Woe to you, O son of Sumayyah ('Ammar)! The rebellious group will kill you'."
Corroborating chains: Imam Ahmad (37/22609) and Imam Muslim (2915) also narrated it via Abu Maslamah from Abu Nadrah from Abu Sa'id al-Khudri, in which Abu Sa'id stated explicitly: "One who is better than me informed me, namely Abu Qatadah (may Allah be pleased with him)".
Caution / Technical note: Imam Shu'bah also narrated this hadith from Khalid al-Hadhdha', from al-Hasan al-Basri and his brother Sa'id, from their mother, from Umm Salamah (may Allah be pleased with her). Imam Ahmad (44/26563) and (26650), Muslim (2916) and al-Nasa'i (8490) recorded it through this route.
Corroboration: Khalid al-Hadhdha' was corroborated in this narration by 'Abdullah bin 'Awn (Ahmad 44/26563, Muslim 2916, al-Nasa'i 8217 and 8492) and Ayyub al-Sakhtiyani (Ahmad 26563, al-Nasa'i 8491). This shows that its narration from Khalid al-Hadhdha' in both ways (from Abu Sa'id and from Umm Salamah) is "mahfuz" (preserved), and Shu'bah's narration from him is sufficient for both. And Allah knows best.
