It is narrated from Sayyiduna Awf bin Malik al-Ashja'i (may Allah be pleased with him) that whenever fay' (wealth acquired without fighting) came to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), he (peace and blessings be upon him) would distribute it that same day; he (peace and blessings be upon him) would give a married man two shares and an unmarried man one share.
This hadith is sahih (authentic) on the condition of Muslim, because he recorded four hadiths with this very chain, but the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim) did not record it.
