It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said about the captives of the Battle of Badr: "If you wish, kill them; and if you wish, take ransom from them and benefit from the ransom, but (in that case) as many of you will be martyred as their number (seventy)." So the last of them to be martyred was Sayyiduna Thabit bin Qays (may Allah be pleased with him), who was martyred in the Battle of Yamamah.
This hadith is sahih (authentic) on the condition of the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim), but they did not record it.

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): In manuscripts (Z, S, 'A) this name is distorted into "Ibrahim", whereas the correct name is "Azhar", as established by manuscript (B) and by the narrations of al-Bayhaqi, which he transmitted from the author (al-Hakim).
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Manuscripts (Z, S, 'A) have "Muhammad bin 'Abidah", which creates a false impression, whereas the correct reading is "Muhammad (Ibn Sirin) from 'Abidah (al-Salmani)", as stated explicitly in manuscript (B) and in al-Bayhaqi.
4/ 166. Grading: Its chain is sahih. Technical note / Defect ('illah): There is a disagreement over whether this hadith is mawsul (with a connected chain) or mursal (with a broken chain); Ibn 'Awn and Hisham bin Hassan narrated it as "mawsul" (as here), and Jarir bin Hazim also supported them with al-Tabari. Technical note / Defect ('illah): In contrast, Isma'il bin 'Ulayyah narrated it from Ibn 'Awn as "mursal". Technical note / Defect ('illah): Imam al-Daraqutni mentioned in "al-'Ilal" that Khalid bin al-Harith, 'Uthman bin 'Umar and Mu'adh bin Mu'adh also narrated it from Ibn 'Awn as "mursal". Corroborating chains and supporting reports: We say that Muhammad bin 'Abd Allah al-Ansari also narrated it from Hisham bin Hassan as "mursal" (Ibn Sa'd: 2/20). Technical note / Defect ('illah): Ayyub al-Sakhtiyani and Ash'ath bin Sawwar also transmitted it from Ibn Sirin as "mursal". Views of the imams: Imam al-Bukhari said that most people narrated it from Ibn Sirin as "mursal", and according to Imam al-Daraqutni too, its being "mursal" is closer to the truth (sawab). Reference / Source: Al-Tirmidhi (1567), al-Nasa'i and Ibn Hibban narrated it by way of Sufyan al-Thawri. The narration of Sufyan al-Thawri states explicitly that Jibril (peace be upon him) commanded the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) to give his Companions the choice, and that he (peace and blessings be upon him) did not do so on his own opinion. Details of the narration: The narration of Jarir bin Hazim makes clear that the coming of Jibril (peace be upon him) took place after the decision to accept ransom; Allah the Exalted disliked this action of the people and then gave them the choice (that if they took ransom, the same number of them would be martyred the following year). Scholarly benefit: This establishes that the descent of Jibril (peace be upon him) took place after the ransom was taken and after Allah's reproach for it was revealed (the verses of Surat al-Anfal). This clarification removes the difficulty that some commentators of "al-Masabih" pointed to. And Allah knows best.
