Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 2651

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "One of the prophets fought against the people of a town, until, when he was about to conquer it, he feared that the sun would set. So he said to the sun: O sun, you too are bound (by Allah's command) and I too am bound; I adjure you by my sanctity, stop for an hour of the day. The narrator says: So Allah held it back until he conquered the town. And (among the earlier nations) the rule was that when they obtained spoils of war, they would offer them as a sacrifice, and then fire would come (from the sky) and consume it (thereby accepting it). But this time, when they set down the spoils, the fire did not come to consume it. At this they said: O Prophet of Allah, why has our sacrifice not been accepted? He said: There has been treachery (theft of the spoils) among you. They asked: How can we know who has the stolen goods? He said: You are twelve tribes; let the chief of every tribe pledge allegiance to me. So the chief of every tribe pledged allegiance to him, and that prophet's hand stuck to the hand of one man among them. He said: The treachery is with your tribe. The man asked: How can I know with which man it is? He said: Call your tribe and take their pledge one by one. So he did so, and his hand stuck to the hand of one man. He asked: Do you have the stolen goods? He said: Yes, I have them. He asked: What is it? He said: It is the head of a bull made of gold; I liked it, so I concealed it. So he brought it and placed it among the spoils, and then the fire came and consumed it." At this Ka'b al-Ahbar said: Allah and His Messenger have spoken the truth; by Allah, it is like this in the Book of Allah, that is, in the Torah. He asked: O Abu Hurayrah, did the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) tell you which prophet it was? He said: No. Ka'b said: He was Yusha' bin Nun (peace be upon him). Then he asked: Did he tell you which town it was? (He said: No.) Ka'b said: It was the city of Ariha (Jericho).
This hadith is gharib and sahih (rare but authentic), but the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim) did not record it.

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Manuscript (Z) has "'Abd Allah", which is wrong, whereas the correct form is "'Ubayd Allah" (diminutive), as found in manuscripts (S, B, 'A) and in the narrations of all the other students of Mubarak bin Fadalah.

Technical note / Defect ('illah): The phrase "qala: la" (he said: no) is not in our handwritten manuscripts, but it is established with all the other hadith scholars. This phrase is necessary in order to remove the false impression that the following sentence, "it is the city of Jericho (Ariha)", is marfu' (a saying of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him)), whereas it is the narrator's own statement.

Grading: This hadith is sahih.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Were it not for the "'an'anah" (the absence of an explicit statement of hearing) of Mubarak bin Fadalah al-Basri, this chain would be hasan; but since Muhammad bin 'Ajlan has corroborated him, his 'an'anah is excusable and, Allah willing, the narration is established. Moreover, this hadith is also narrated from Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) through another route, which will come later.
Reference / Source: Imam al-Bazzar (8458) narrated it by way of Abu Hammam Muhammad bin al-Zibriqan, and al-Tabarani in "al-Awsat" (6600) by way of Sa'id bin Sulayman al-Wasiti; both of them transmit it with this same chain of Mubarak bin Fadalah.
Reference / Source: Abu Sa'id al-Naqqash and al-Khatib al-Baghdadi narrated it with the chain of Muhammad bin 'Ajlan from Sa'id al-Maqburi, and its chain is "qawi" (strong).
Details of the narration: Without the story of Ka'b al-Ahbar, Imam Ahmad, al-Bukhari (3124), Muslim (1747) and Ibn Hibban narrated it by way of Hammam bin Munabbih, and al-Nasa'i and Ibn Hibban by way of Sa'id bin al-Musayyib (both from Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him)). The narration of Sa'id bin al-Musayyib and Hammam also has the addition that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said on that occasion: "Indeed Allah has made the spoils lawful for us; this is His mercy and a lightening that He granted us, knowing our weakness".
Note / Clarification: The word of the hadith "rakadti" means: "you stood still and stopped moving (came to rest)".
Note / Clarification: "Al-sibt" is the singular of "al-asbat"; among the descendants of Ishaq bin Ibrahim (peace be upon them both) it is used (for a clan) in the same way as the word "qabilah" (tribe) is used among the descendants of Isma'il (peace be upon him).
