Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 2649

Amir bin Abi Amir al-Ash'ari narrates from his father that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "The tribe of al-Asd and the Ash'aris are excellent people; they do not flee from the battlefield, nor do they betray; they are from me and I am from them." The narrator says: I related this to Mu'awiyah (may Allah be pleased with him), and he said: It is not like that; rather, the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "They are from me and (turn) to me." I said: My father did not tell me like that; rather, he said: I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) himself say: "They are from me and I am from them." Mu'awiyah (may Allah be pleased with him) said: Then you know your father's hadith better.
This hadith has a sahih (authentic) chain of narration, but the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim) did not record it.

Hadith Grading
Hadith Takhrij «
Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Grading: Its chain is da'if because 'Abd Allah bin Maladh and Malik bin Masruh are unknown (majhul). "Jarir" in the chain refers to Jarir bin Hazim.
Reference / Source: Imam Ahmad (28/ 17166, 29/ 17501) narrated it from Wahb bin Jarir, and al-Tirmidhi (3947) via Ibrahim bin Ya'qub and others, with this same chain of Wahb bin Jarir.
Note / Clarification: The word "al-Asd" (with a sukun on the sin) refers to the tribe of "al-Azd"; it is pronounced both with a zay (Azd) and with a sin (Asd).
Note / Clarification: The words of the hadith "la yukhilluna" are like this in our handwritten manuscripts. It can have two meanings: (1) they do not absent themselves from the battlefield; (2) they never become needy (poor), because when their provisions run out they share them among themselves.
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: The second meaning is supported by the hadith of Abu Musa al-Ash'ari (may Allah be pleased with him) in al-Bukhari (2486) and Muslim (2500): "When the Ash'aris became short of provisions in a military expedition, they would gather all their belongings in one cloth and divide them equally; they are from me and I am from them".
Technical note / Defect ('illah): With all the other hadith scholars apart from the author (al-Hakim), "yaghulluna" (with a ghayn) occurs instead of "yukhilluna", meaning that they do not embezzle (ghulul) from the spoils. And Allah knows best.
